The scammers keep scamming. The latest one is that someone may call you, and they may know your social security number. They'll ask you to repeat it so they have your voice recorded saying it. Please, never ever give out your social security number, or any other information, over the phone, unless you placed the call and are certain who you're talking to!

Here's the latest scam going around, I've been hearing a lot about it this week. This one involves BECU customers, but it applies to all banks.

You get a text on your phone that looks like it's from BECU asking if a charge is legit. You reply no, and get a phone call from a "BECU fraud representative". The caller ID shows it coming from BECU. They will ask for your information, and send you a six digit code in a text to prove it's you. Once you tell them the code, your bank accounts are emptied within minutes.

A good rule of thumb is that codes texted to your phone are not meant to be given to anybody else, ever.

This is important information for those who still have student loan balances. Normally when you have debt forgiven, it counts as taxable income, but apparently this will not be.

We are offering a tax class this fall. Learn to do your own taxes, or we will be hiring from this class for next tax season. Here's info!

You are invited to attend Tax Partners Northwest Tax School!

Details: You will have access to your materials online and can work through the chapters at your own pace. Once a week, we will have a support session where you can review concepts and have questions answered. Materials will be available September 9 and the first class meeting will be the week of September 21 at 6 p.m., and every Wednesday at 6 thereafter through November 9.

There are 16 chapters, and we will be covering two chapters a week. Suggested time for study per chapter is five to six hours. You will be able to work ahead if you like, or catch up if you fall behind, but the support sessions will only discuss the two chapters assigned for the previous week. Online access is available 24/7, so you can do the work at your convenience. We will be available by email for additional questions.

Each chapter will cover a different aspect of tax law. You will read, answer quizzes, practice and take an end of chapter test.

Topics covered will include filing status, different types of income including wages, fringe benefits, retirement income, self-employment and rental income; capital gains; credits, deductions and depreciation. You’ll also learn about your professional responsibilities as a tax preparer.

Cost of the class is $250. This includes all online materials, coursework and the support sessions. A hard copy of the textbook can be purchased for $75 if desired.

At the end of the class, we will be hiring new employees from among those who pass the class for a variety of positions. There is no guarantee of employment. Training for those hired will begin in December and contracts will run through 4-18-23.

Please email me at [email protected] and let me know if you would like a registration form. We look forward to getting to know you!

If you make estimated payments to IRS toward your 2022 taxes, the second one is due today. If you file jointly and make the payment online, please, please, please do it under the name and social security number of whomever is listed first on the return. If you make it under the second name, it causes all kinds of problems, because IRS can't match it up.
