Elizabeth “Liz” Hamlett was hired as Deputy Commissioner of the Revenue for Lunenburg County in April 2009. Liz was appointed to office as Commissioner upon the retirement of long-time Commissioner, Patricia M. In November of 2014, she was unopposed in the special election to fill the unexpired term of her predecessor. The large number of votes that she garnered at that time were proof of the trus
t and support of the citizens of the Lunenburg County. Liz has over a decade of experience in the assessment of Personal, Business, and Real Property Taxes, Public Service Taxation, and Virginia State Income Tax. She is a member of the Commissioners of the Revenue Association of Virginia, the Virginia Association of Assessing Officers (VAAO), Virginia Association of Local Tax Assessors (VALTA), Virginia Association of Local Elected Constitutional Officers (VALECO), and the Commissioners of the Revenue Political Action Committee (CORPAC). Liz is also enrolled in the Commissioners of the Revenue Career Development Program and received designation as a Master Commissioner of the Revenue in 2017. Her peers have elected her to the position of Secretary of the Commissioner's of the Revenue Association of Virginia. Liz has been an integral part of many changes the Commissioner’s office has seen in recent years, including the conversion of assessment data to the current BAI Municipal Software in 2011 and the County’s transition to bi-annual billing. As Commissioner, Liz has worked to make Real Estate information more easily accessible to the public. The office has also overseen two large projects: conversion of paper tax maps to a Geographic Information System (GIS), and a new Computer Aided Mass Appraisal (CAMA) system. These projects allow tax payers, real estate agents, and appraisal companies to view County tax maps and real estate assessment data from the comfort of their home or office. Liz says, “I assure you that I will continue to uphold the integrity of the Commissioner’s office as I administer the duties set forth by the State of Virginia and the Lunenburg County Board of Supervisors. I am so fortunate to have a career that I love and an exceptional staff by my side. Together, with the strong foundation built by Pat Adams in her 30 years of experience, we are working to bring the office of the Commissioner of the Revenue into the computer age – making assessment and tax parcel information more easily accessible to the public.”
Prior to coming to work in the Commissioner’s office, Liz worked as the office administrator of AnswerLinks, Inc. for six years. Liz is a 2004 graduate of Indiana University of Pennsylvania, where she studied music, and a 1999 graduate of Altoona Area High School in Altoona, Pennsylvania. Liz lives in Victoria with her two children, James Ryland, III (“Jamie”), and Kathleen Anne (“Katie Anne”). Liz is a member of Victoria Christian Church, where she also serves as Choir Director. She is president of the Victoria Elementary School PTO and a Girl Scouts of America leader and volunteer.
