There are several changes in the upcoming years. Reminder we are filing 2025 taxes in 2026. The charitable contribution changes do not take effect until we file the 2026 tax return. Below are some suggestions for 2025.
For the 2025 tax return the rules for charitable giving are largely the same as in previous years. This means you can only deduct charitable if you itemize. Most taxpayers take the standard deduction, which for 2025 is 15750(single filers) 31500 for married couples.
Donations must be made to IRS qualified 501(c)3 organizations
For cash contributions generally you can deduct up to 60% of your Adjusted Gross Income.
Documentation: You must keep records, such as a bank statement or a receipt from the charity. For any single donation of $250 or more you must obtain written acknowledgement from the charity.
PLAN AHEAD FOR 2026
For those who not itemize starting in 2026 you will be able to deduct a portion of your charitable giving. You may deduct up to $1000 in cash gifts to eligible public charities or $2000 if married filing jointly.
