The IRS raised the standard mileage rate to a whopping 72.5 cents per mile for business use in 2026.

Here's what that does NOT mean ↓

If you're a small business who drove your personal car 10,000 miles, you can automatically deduct $7,250 for mileage on your tax return.

Not every mile you drive is deductible! Personal trips and your daily commute to your office generally don't count.

The IRS wants to see your mileage log, including details from each drive, like:

→ the date
→ the business purpose
→ business miles driven (starting point + destination works)

Now, you don't *have* to use the standard mileage rate!

If you want to track all of your vehicle expenses (fuel, maintenance, insurance) and deduct your business-use portion of those, use the actual expense method instead.

Need help figuring out a system to best track your mileage as a small business? Message me!

Things that keep me up at night: when a client casually mentions a huge new life change AFTER we just filed their tax return.

These might not all seem like obvious *tax* events, but your accountant needs to know things, like if you:

→ Buy or sell your home
→ Moved or are working in a new state
→ Start a new business
→ Purchase a rental property
→ Buy or sell your home
→ Add a dependent
→ Have a major income or job change

I’d rather you tell me TOO much, and then I can tell you it doesn’t matter, than to be left out of the loop on something the IRS cares about!

Balancing summer plans, bookkeeping, taxes, and running your startup is more than a full-time job...

But I can take at least one of those off your plate! 😜

It would be realllly nice if the IRS had a cute little decisions tree for what receipts a small business needs to keep...

But, they actually don't give a *ton* of guidance on receipts.

A few things they're sticklers on:

The IRS wants you to keep receipts for all lodging (hotels, Airbnbs, etc) while on business travel.

For any purchases of $75 or more of other business travel, non-entertainment meals, gifts, or transportation? Keep those receipts, too.

Otherwise, the IRS wants records of the date, amount, payee, proof of payment, and business purpose of your purchases.

Account statements and good bookkeeping can help substantiate your small business expenses.

I'm kind of a small business owner whisperer; your books tell me more about your business than you'd think. 🤫

Sometimes the stories are good, sometimes they expose those things you've been meaning to get to... for the past five months.

Just so you know, I see these things in small business owners' books all the time, but I'm NEVER judging you for them.

Bookkeeping problems get messier and more expensive the longer they go unresolved... I don't want that for you!

TurboTax is only as accurate as the answers you give it, and those answers can be a lot more than just checking Yes/No.

If you're asking for my help answering those questions, you're asking me to interpret your tax situation and make a judgment call. ⚖️

At that point, I might as well just prepare your whole return!

DIY tax software can be great if your return is simple, but if you have a business, multiple income streams, complex investments...

It's very easy to mess things up.

So no, I won't sit next to you while you use TurboTax, but I will happily take taxes off your plate completely! 😜

If I had a dollar for every time a small business owner asked me, "Can I deduct this meal?", I'd be eating at In-N-Out every night! 🥘

Meals are tricky... the last thing we want is to give the IRS any reason to look at your business more closely.

Here's what made the difference in this small business owner's tax bill:

1️⃣ We adjusted their entity structure and compensation (distributions + salary).

2️⃣ They maxed out their contributions to their SEP IRA to reduce their taxable income and save for retirement.

3️⃣ They accelerated purchasing business equipment (like camera gear, software, and tools they already needed) to increase their deductions for the year.

Tax planning throughout the year is the key to making sure you don't pay too much in April!
