Here’s your last-minute playbook to beat the deadline without breaking a sweat:

1) Max out those retirement accounts ASAP – it’s your money’s best night out. The deadline to contribute to a retirement account for a specific tax year, such as an IRA (Individual Retirement Account), is typically April 15th of the following year, the same as the tax filing deadline. This means that you usually have until April 15th to make contributions that will count for the previous tax year.

2) Pay as much as you can now. If you can't pay the full amount you owe, you should still pay as much as you can by the filing deadline. This reduces the interest and penalties you'll owe. After paying as much as you can, you can work with the IRS to set up a payment plan for the remaining balance.

3) Triple-check those digits. Accuracy is one of the most important aspects of filing taxes an extra zero can really change things up.

4) Time’s crunched? File for an extension. While an extension gives you more time to file, not paying what you owe by the original deadline will lead to additional costs. The IRS charges interest on unpaid taxes from the due date of the return until the payment date.
