Great news if you will be filling out a FAFSA for yourself or a dependent: for the coming year, the IRS has re-instated the helpful tool that allows you to transfer your tax return data directly into the FAFSA form. It's another reason to get your return done early, so that when you need the info for financial aid, it's available.

About that Equifax breach...we'd like to advise that you ensure you are prepared to submit your tax returns as early as possible in 2018. Security experts agree on this step so you can close the window for scammers to file in your name, with information they may have obtained from the breach. (Remember: no need to panic. Small business owners, view keeping receipts as an "Audit Insurance Plan." While most people see them as scraps of paper you find in the cupholder and throw out, you *must* view them as important business documents. If your return is audited by the IRS, you need to be able to produce actual receipts for your purchases. (No, credit card statements aren't enough.)

We want to remind you to keep your receipts for purchases you make for your classroom. You get a tax deduction (whether you itemize or not) for non-reimbursed expenses you incur. After all, you do have one of the most important jobs in our society. (Again, thank you!)
