Considering filling an extremely part time assistant role in Long Island for next tax season. While I finish up extensions now, you would be able to see what the work involves and possibly pick up a few hours immediately if interested.

It would only be a couple days or maybe 3 half days a week, roughly January 18-April 15, hours are flexible. At $15/hr that would be around $2,100-$3,200. There could be a few days available to work outside of tax season, but they are not required. Open to considering a work-study arrangement with a highly referred high school student depending on what the school requirements are.

No tax experience necessary, but exceptional confidentiality and organizational skill is. Confidentiality and security of client information must be strictly maintained!

Need to be able to use or quickly learn to use the following software/hardware:
-Word/Excel/Outlook and possibly other Office products
-Aspects of Intuit ProSeries
-FoxIt PDF editor
-ScanSnap IX2500
-Canon MF249dw printer/scanner/copier
-Yvette electric 3-hole punch
-Typical office items

Tasks include, but are not limited to:
-Printing, scanning, and organizing various documents
-Printing and stuffing envelopes for mailing
-Contacting clients by phone for missing documents and clarifying information
-Assembling client packets
-Scheduling appointments
-Maintaining the physical and digital filing system
-Syncing files between computers

I was saddened to hear from Cindy about Ron's passing. My love and prayers are with Cindy, Clint, Angela, and the entire family, as well as friends, and the community mourning the loss of Ron.

Ron Rahjes and my dad were close friends, and it was through that friendship I was able to buy my first car, a soft top Geo Tracker, from Ron's son, Clint. Clint and Ron had a talent for rebuilding salvage vehicles, and the Tracker ran trouble free as long as I owned it.

Almost 20 years later in 2017, Ron was one of the two men who made it possible for me to move back to Northwest Kansas. The first was my Granddad Gebhard, who asked if I was interested in renting his farm ground, and who went home to Christ a couple weeks ago on March 1, 2026.

The second was Ron. Upon learning I had almost 10 years tax experience at the time and was not interested in working with cattle over the winter, Ron asked me to reach out to chat. We sat down and discussed what we were each looking for, how the arrangement would work, and quickly fell into an easy working relationship sharing the workload so he could share more time with his grandkids.

Listening to Ron and Cindy...[ahem] discuss [cough]...what his notes meant for how Cindy was to enter information in the program provided regular entertainment. I always knew when one of his kids called because Ron's voice would sound even more jovial than usual! I'll never hear the word "chum" without hearing Ron's voice when he'd greet Clint on the phone, usually during halftime of a KU basketball game.

As I gained more of my own clients and couldn't take on more of Ron's, he brought in Russell to handle more of his workload. Cindy's calls during her solo trips to visit grandkids really made him want to be there instead of the tax office, and he wasn't about to fall behind in his grandfatherly duties! I am deeply grateful to Ron for connecting Russell and I. He has become a good friend and trusted colleague, and I have zero concerns about our ability to continue doing tax work together.

We are never given as much time as we want in life, not even close, but I thank God for the time I did get with Ron, my mentor and my friend.

Alright, trying something new... I've been using Moneydance for several years now because it's a one time cost around $50 instead of a subscription like Quicken or QuickBooks. It's simple enough to use that my 70 year old mother loves it.

Because I use it and like it, and get asked about QuickBooks alternatives often, I figured I should see if they have an affiliate referral program. They do! So, if you want to check it out, feel free to use my referral link. Or don't and just Google it to find it. Either way I highly recommend Moneydance!

Any time I think I've read the dumbest idea for a tax bill, someone doubles down with a worse idea.

Introducing SB488, a bill to eliminate all property tax on real and personal property, and replace it with a surcharge on purchases. (A sales tax. It's a sales tax, as much as they work to avoid calling it a sales tax, that's effectively what it is.)

To be fair, it's a bill to put an amendment to the Kansas Constitution before voters, so if the bill passes nothing happens until voters decide.

Clarification concerning the overtime deduction. If you receive overtime pay at the rate of time and a half, the deduction is only for the "half" portion of pay. So, say you work 40 hour and $10/hr, then pick up an extra 10 hours where you are paid $15/hr. Your overtime deduction would be $50, NOT $150.

Quick clarification on a common misconception people are having related to the no tax on tips bill...

Even though it uses the term "cash tips," that includes tips via credit card. I realize the wording makes it confusing, it is likely many members of Congress do not understand the meaning of cash tips. The IRS definition is what matters. Feel free to enlighten your friends and family.

IRS definition of cash tips can be found here: https://www.irs.gov/businesses/small-businesses-self-employed/tip-recordkeeping-and-reporting

Relevant line: Cash tips include tips received from customers, charged tips (for example, credit and debit card charges) distributed to the employee by the employee's employer and tips received from other employees under any tip-sharing arrangement. Tips also include tips received by both directly and indirectly tipped employees.

Provides information and resources dealing with reporting tip income for all industries that deal with tipping of employees.

Concerning the unanimous passing of the no tax on tips bill, there are a few things to know...

It is limited to $25,000 of tips being deducted from income.

It only applies to jobs that typically received tips prior to the Dec 31, 2023. In other words, you can't switch to tip based income unless it was considered common practice beforehand. The Treasury Secretary will put out a list of jobs that qualify.

The deduction does not appear to apply if the employee makes over $160k from a single employer.

The deduction is allowed regardless of if you itemize or not.

In short, a specific group of taxpayers will benefit, it is obviously very exciting for them. The vast majority will see no benefit. Again, this could have been accomplished easier and with a wider impact by simply increasing the standard deduction.

When they nominate unqualified and incompetent people for positions in my professional field, I become extremely skeptical of the competence of those they put in leadership roles outside my area of expertise.

"Long describes himself on social media as a “Certified Tax and Business Advisor,” a credential he received after attending a three-day course..." 🤦

Billy Long’s effort to promote the credit, along with his pushing of a fraud-ridden pandemic-era tax break, will be under close scrutiny during his Senate confirmation hearing.
