TOP THREE OVERLOOKED SMALL BUSINESS TAX DEDUCTIONS
Don't leave money on the table! Include these Top Three Expenses to reduce your tax liability!
1- Start-Up Costs
You usually have start-up costs when you open a new business. It could be construction and material costs to refurbish an existing building, or the costs for training employees, or fees paid to consultants or attorneys. All of that is tax deductible!
2- Automobile Expenses. You are allowed to deduct mileage OR actual costs to maintain your vehicle if you use it for business purposes but not both. Mileage is best but you have to keep a mileage log of your trips. And you'll want to record your odometer reading at the beginning of the year - and at the end. A photo taken on your cell phone is an easy way to document total miles for the year.
3-Travel Costs and Business Meals. If you have to travel for your business the cost for airfare, lodging, taxis and meals can be deductible. You need to record what the trip was for and how it is related to your business. Business meals may also be deductible if you are meeting with someone and discuss your business- remember to record who you were with and how it relates to your business.
There are many deductions for business that you may be missing and some that may be listed here that cannot be used as a deduction for your particular business. Using a tax professional is the best way to get all the deductions you can! Call the Tax Pros at Pro Tax Solutions now to find out more about your small business deductions! (209) 642-7702

What happens if you don't pay your taxes?
The best course of action is to file your tax return and pay what you can. The IRS will send you a notice showing what you owe. They will include penalties for not paying on time (after the April 15th due date) and interest. Interest is incurred monthly on the amount due until the balance due is paid off.
However, there is hope! The IRS will allow you to set up an installment payment plan or, if you qualify, forgive part or all of the amount you owe.

Want to get a bigger refund? Consider investing more in your retirement account and effectively pay yourself, not the IRS!
Most retirement accounts are considered pre-taxed. If you have an employer retirement such as a 401(k) or 403(b) you can contribute as much as $22,500, or $30,000 if you're 50 or older, for 2023. By putting money away for your retirement you are reducing your taxable income, effectively increasing your refund!
If you don't have an employee retirement account you can open a Traditional IRA or contribute to an existing IRS approved retirement account up to $6,500, or $7,500 if you're 50 or older.
If you didn't contribute before December 31, don't stress! You can contribute either before you file your tax return or April 15th - whichever comes first.
There are a lot of different retirement plans out there, including Roth and Simple Plans, but not all plans meet the IRS criteria for the pre-tax reduction. If you're not sure what type of retirement account you have, or what type to open, call us at Pro Tax Solutions! (209) 642-7702

Standard Deduction amounts increase for 2024:
Tax filers who don't itemize their deductions will use the Standard Deduction on their Federal and State returns to reduce their taxable income.
The amount of the Standard Deduction has increased for 2024. If you file Single or Married Filing Separately the amount of the Standard Deduction increased from $13,850 to $14,600. Up $750. For Married Filing Joint the amount increased $1,500 from $27,700 to $29,200. And for those filing Head of Household, the amount increased $1,100 from $20,800 to $21,900.
If you're not sure if you should use the Standard Deduction or the Itemized Deduction, call and we can go over expenses that qualify for Itemized deductions.

Tax Record Organization- what to do before your appointment.
- Put W-2's, 1099's, Social Security Statements, etc... all your tax forms in a folder as you receive them. Whether they come in the mail or when you download/ print them- keep them all together in one place so they're easy to find when it's time to come in.
-Use a Tax Checklist. Like the one in the photo! Call and I will send out an easy-to-follow checklist specifically created for your personal, or rental and/or business income and expenses that will help organize all those receipts that are currently floating around so that you get every deduction possible!
- Itemizing your deduction means less taxable income- if you can do it. Make a list of your itemized deductions before your appointment so we can determine what works better- the Standard Deduction or an Itemized Deduction. If you're not sure what qualifies as an Itemized Deduction - use my Tax Checklist!
