On this Veterans Day, we’re taking a moment to reflect and say thank you. To all who have served and to the families who support them: your sacrifice, strength, and dedication mean more than words can express.

Should stockbrokers and insurance agents be allowed to call themselves "advisors"? NASAA says no.

Most people don’t realize their “advisor” could actually be a salesman. About 25 years ago, some stockbrokers and insurance agents began to refer to themselves as advisors. Until now the term “advisor” has not been regulated.

The North American Securities Administrators Association (NASAA) has updated its model rules to limit the use of the title "adviser" and "advisor" to professionals who are properly licensed and act as fiduciaries. Registered investment advisors are fiduciary advisors. Salesmen are not fiduciary advisors and regulators are on the path for transparency for the public.

At Corkern & Company, Inc. we’ve always embraced a higher standard—as fee-only fiduciaries, we act in our clients’ best interest 100% of the time. No commissions. No sales agendas. Just advice you can trust.

Market headlines may shift overnight — but long-term investing can be a consistent strategy for an unpredictable world. The recent 90-day tariff pause caused a major rally in major U.S. stock indexes, with the S&P 500 and Nasdaq posting various record-breaking daily gains. Investors who stayed the course reaped the rewards. But volatility may continue over the coming days and weeks.

Our team is here to help you navigate volatility with confidence, clarity, and a long-term plan that prioritizes your goals. If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to give us a call. bcorkern.com

On Thursday, January 9, 2025, our nation will observe a National Day of Mourning to honor the life and legacy of former President Jimmy Carter. National Days of Mourning are a solemn occasion, and they are rare, with the last observance occurring in 2018 for President George H.W. Bush.

In recognition of this day, federal offices and the U.S. stock market will be closed. Our office will remain open.

We thank you for your continued trust in our team and are here to support you as the new year begins. If you have any questions or need assistance, please feel free to reach out. bcorkern.com

•Year in Review - 2024 | "Financially Speaking" (December 20, 2024)•

The 19th-century author Honoré de Balzac wrote, “Our worst misfortunes never happen, and most miseries lie in anticipation.” This sentiment perfectly captures 2024. Worries over a “hard landing” recession, market pullbacks, and election turmoil drove investor sentiment to extremes. Yet, as we reflect on the year, we find that many feared outcomes never materialized. The economy is growing steadily, and the Fed is still cutting interest rates. Inflation is near pre-pandemic levels as the November CPI measured 2.7%. The job market remains healthy- unemployment remains low at only 4.2%, and 2.3 million new jobs have been created over the past 12 months. GDP growth hit 2.8% in Q3, which exceeded expectations. This has all supported strong returns for several asset classes (see chart below). These positive developments highlight an important truth: excessive worry and fear can lead to decisions that undermine long-term success. Many short-term investors that were fearful about volatility didn’t stick to the plan and sold when things got tough; the long-term investors who have weathered volatility have been reaping the benefits.

As we look to 2025, finding balance—both in emotions and portfolios—will be challenging again. Stock market valuations are well above average, the path of interest rates is still uncertain, doubts about artificial intelligence are emerging, and geopolitical risks are evolving. There will likely be many more unforeseen events that will heighten investor concerns. But history shows that disciplined investors focused on the long-term are better positioned to navigate uncertainty and achieve financial goals.

As we celebrate a strong year for markets, the new year offers an opportunity to focus on balance and discipline. With thoughtful planning and a steady hand, we’re confident we’ll all be well-positioned for success in 2025 and beyond.

We are only five days away from Christmas! We wanted to take a moment to extend our warmest wishes to you and yours.

One of Barry's favorite Christmas movies is "It's a Wonderful Life." We wanted to share this quote from Clarence, the angel, in the movie: "Remember, no man is a failure who has friends." We hope you have a joyful holiday season!

As always, please feel free to reach out if there’s anything we can assist you with. Merry Christmas from Corkern & Company!

Our Story

Barry M. Corkern & Co., Inc. works to advise and assist our client in making financial decisions by providing information to influence strategic thinking and perspective on their life-long and multi-generational goals. We endeavor to work quietly, humbly and successfully.

Our foundation is steeped in best practice fiduciary standards to provide independent, objective and tailored advice and guidance to our clients. We are not a standardized financial planning firm which exists to sell financial products or services. Our objective is to help clients to make informed, thoughtful decisions which impact not only their lifetimes, but the lifetimes of their next generations.

Hence, we call our work multi-generational planning. Our work has its greatest impact on the complexity of the client circumstances and needs, and not based on how much money they have to invest. The process requires a comprehensive knowledge and experience base. We work with our clients and their other advisors in the areas of law, income tax, insurance, real estate and finance. Over thirty-five years, we have experienced the development, and then implementation, of strategic and estate planning for their families.
