Whereas National Mule Day celebrates all mules, today we remember just one, the Matanzas Mule. On April 27, 1898, during the beginning stages of the Spanish-American War, the United States Navy fired on Matanzas, a city on the North shore of Cuba. One casualty of the bombardment was a mule, and the Spanish buried it with full military honors. About 200 people were present for its burial, including members of the militia, volunteers, marines, and distinguished officers. They walked in a procession as melancholy music played. Officers spoke at the grave, muskets were shot off, and the mule was lowered into the ground while wrapped in the Spanish flag. Although the mule was buried centuries ago, we remember it again today, and the sacrifice it made for its country.
