Scammers take advantage of holiday weekends when many retailers are offering discounts to try and steal your personal and financial information. Before you hand over your information, check out some tips to determine if the website or email is legitimate.

Be aware.

Watch out for a scam email that may read, ‘Notification of IRS Audit & Investigation.’ The email may direct you to download a “secure” file (in some cases via sites like Cognito Forms) and submit documentation, but in fact the link leads to a fraudulent site that may steal your data or install malware. An update from the IRS regarding the CP-14 letters sent to so many in error.

July 27, 2022 — The IRS is aware that some payments made for 2021 tax returns have not been correctly applied to joint taxpayer accounts, and these taxpayers are receiving erroneous balance due notices (CP-14 notices) or notices showing the incorrect amount.

GET READY TO SPLIT YOUR MILEAGE BY DATE FOR 2022:

Per IRS, beginning July 1, 2022, the standard mileage rates are revised as follows: 62.5 cents per mile for business use of an automobile and 22 cents per mile for medical/moving.

The rate for charitable mileage remains the same (at 14 cents per mile) since it's fixed by statute.
