An extension on your tax return is nothing to be worried about, about 40% of America files for an extension. However, the IRS still wants their money by 4/15. If you have a W2 job and received a return of $2000 or less last year, you may want to think about sending in a payment with your extension to avoid a penalty. If you overpay, you get it back as a refund, but if you owe and don't send in a payment, you will get a small penalty.

So, here's the problem that's affecting almost everyone. When the new tax law passed, they lowered the tax rate, so they are charging you less overall tax. They then tried to lower the withholding tables to match the new lower tax rate. The problem is that they messed up the math and almost everyone under withheld, so you end up with a smaller refund or owing when usually you don't. A typical client could see a decrease in their taxes of $500, but has under withheld by $1500, thereby owing $1000. If you haven't done your taxes yet and get your income through a W-2 job, brace yourself.

Now that 2019 is here, a friendly reminder that the sooner you get your taxes done, the less time there is for a scammer to use your information on a false return! Make an envelope and collect all of your important tax papers as they come in so you don't have to dig them back up.
