🎃 Things that are scary:

🧛 Vampires
🕷️ Spiders
📦 A shoebox containing 11 months of receipts

Okay, that last one got us. 😂

If you've been avoiding your bookkeeping and tax records all year, Halloween seems like the perfect day to face the monster.

Start getting organized NOW.

Gather important documents.
Review income and expenses.
Make sure your bookkeeping is current.
Identify what's missing.
And get help before tax season is breathing down your neck.

Because your tax return shouldn't require a séance to figure out what happened during the year. 😂

If you're self-employed or have income that isn't subject to enough withholding, estimated tax payments may be part of your tax picture.

For taxpayers required to make quarterly estimated payments, paying too little during the year can potentially result in a penalty—even if you're due a refund when you eventually file.

That's why tax planning shouldn't start the week a payment is due.

Know what's coming.
Plan for it.
Set money aside.
Ask questions early.

January 15 will arrive whether you're ready for it or not.

Groceries.
Client payment.
Electric bill.
Business supplies.
Dinner.
Software subscription.
Gas.
Another client payment.

All running through ONE account.

What could possibly go wrong? 😂

Keeping business and personal finances separate can make recordkeeping much cleaner and make it easier to understand what's actually happening in your business.

The IRS also recommends maintaining a business checking account separate from your personal checking account.

Cleaner records.
Easier bookkeeping.
Less time trying to remember whether that $87 charge was dinner with a client or Tuesday tacos with your family.

Business owners love to ask tax questions in January.

But there's one tiny problem...

December 31 already happened. 😂

October gives you something January can't:

TIME.

Time to review your numbers.
Time to identify missing records.
Time to discuss estimated taxes.
Time to ask questions.
Time to get your bookkeeping caught up.
Time to prepare for year-end.

Tax preparation looks backward.

Tax planning gives you an opportunity to think ahead.

So don't wait until the year is over to start paying attention to your 2026 numbers.

$100,000 in sales sounds fantastic.

Until you introduce it to:

Payroll.
Rent.
Supplies.
Insurance.
Marketing.
Fees.
Taxes.
And that one subscription you've apparently been paying for since 2022. 😂

Revenue gets the attention.

Profit tells a much more useful story.

Your bookkeeping helps you see where the money came from, where it went and what your business actually has to show for all that activity.

Because “we're busy” and “we're profitable” aren't necessarily the same thing.

Know your numbers.

Mystery deposit: $2,450.

Random charge: $387.

Receipt with absolutely no explanation: $129.

Business owner in March:

“I feel like I should remember this.” 😂

This is why good tax preparation starts with good records.

Your records should help identify your income and expenses and provide documentation for what's reported on your return.

Don't wait months to figure out transactions you could explain today.

Review.
Categorize.
Document.
Repeat.

Tax season just got a little less dramatic.

📅 It's October 15.

For many individual taxpayers who timely requested a six-month extension to file their 2025 federal income tax return, today's the filing deadline.

Certain calendar-year corporations that timely requested a six-month extension also have an October 15 filing deadline.

One important reminder:

An extension to FILE generally isn't an extension to PAY.

So if you've been putting off that extended return, today's date deserves your attention.

And if this year's tax season taught you that you never want to be scrambling like this again?

Let's start planning earlier for next year.

Listen...

We love Target too.

But bookkeeping works better when business expenses are categorized accurately. 😂

One of the easiest ways to make your books messy is tossing transactions into whatever category seems close enough and promising yourself you'll fix it later.

Later usually becomes December.

December becomes tax season.

And suddenly you're trying to remember what you bought eight months ago.

Take a few minutes regularly to review and categorize transactions while they're still fresh in your mind.

Or better yet, let someone else help keep your books organized while you run the business.

The glovebox.
The bottom of your purse.
Your email.
A random kitchen drawer.
A shoebox labeled “TAX STUFF.”

We have seen your filing system. 😂

And while we're impressed with your creativity, let's make tax preparation a little easier this year.

Start organizing receipts, invoices, income records and other important documents now.

Good records help support the income and expenses reported on your tax return—and they're much easier to deal with when you organize them throughout the year instead of all at once.

Your future tax-season self will thank you.
