IRS Could Have the Power Ground Your Travel Plans

Back in 2012, Senator Harry Reid proposed the idea of restricting anyone who owed $50,000 or more in taxes from traveling internationally. The idea was not passed in 2012, but it has resurfaced in Senate Bill 1813. This bill is aimed at highway safety, but also carries a clause that would allow the government to prevent anyone who owes more than $50,000 from traveling outside the U.S. [ 57 more words. ]

You Can't Do That

Tax preparers are back in the news this week in a big way. Let's start with James Ericson from Hawaii, who may be responsible for the largest fraud this year. Mr. Ericson allegedly filed over 1,000 false claims between 2007 and 2012 that cost the U.S. Treasury over $31 million dollars. That is an unbelievably large amount of money to come from a lone preparer. [ 211 more words. ]

State Refunds Could Be Issued by Check

I have mentioned it numerous times in the past few months, but this season has been seen a massive amount of fraud. Federal and state governments have been issuing warnings all year along with tax preparares such as Turbotax. States have started to respond to this fraud in a major way. Multiple states, including South Carolina, Colorado and Connecticut, have issued statements informing taxpayers that they may be receiving their state refund via paper check, even if you indicated that you would like your refund direct deposited. Each member of your family is required to have minimum essential coverage under the Affordable Care Act. If you do not have minimum essential coverage, you will be assessed a penalty when filing your tax return this year, unless you qualify for an exemption. There are different sorts of exemptions, some are available only if you used a government exchange for coverage, while others can be claimed as you file your return at the end of the year. Statute for 2011 Refund Expires In April

The IRS allows taxpayers a three-year grace period to file returns for refund. Which means, if you have not filed your 2011 tax return and are due a refund, you only have another month to do so before the three-year window expires. As it stands, the IRS currently has unclaimed refunds totaling $1 billion from over one million taxpayers who did not file a tax return in 2011. [ 189 more words. ]

IRS Wants Lower Reporting Threshold For Casinos

Just after the IRS proposed a "win" for most slot players, it announced that it wants to lower the reporting threshold for casinos on slots, video poker and keno from $1,200 to $600. Although the IRS is giving the public three months to respond to the proposal, the American Gaming Association has already voiced its concern regarding the lower limits. [ 296 more words. ]

You Can't Do That - Hollywood Edition

This week's "You Can't Do That" takes us to Hollywood. Actor Robert De Niro owed the IRS $6.4 million dollars for 2013 tax return and has yet to pay the balance. De Niro stated that he never received the IRS deliquency notices that stated there was an amount outstanding because they were sent to an old address. Since he did not respond to the multiple notices, the IRS placed a lien on his property. [ 209 more words. ]

IRS Safe Harbor Proposal for Gamblers

Earlier this week, the IRS proposed revenue procedure 2015-21 that would provide a safe harbor method for certain slot players. Now, this is just a proposed procedure, but if it is finalized there will (finally) be an IRS-generated definition for "gambling session" in regards to slot machine play. Currently, the IRS regulations do not make it clear what constitutes a slot machine gambling session. [ 327 more words. ]
