What to Do If You Receive an IRS Notice in the Mail.

Some people get letters from the IRS in the spring or early summer as tax returns are processed. If you receive an IRS notice, do not panic, but open it promptly and read it carefully.

Many IRS letters deal with changes or corrections made to a person’s tax return. If the change results in additional tax due, paying the indicated amount quickly will prevent further accumulation of penalties or interest charges. However, if you disagree with a change or correction, you have the right to appeal. Regardless of whether any action is required, store the notice with your tax return, so you can refer to the corrected figures when filing next year.

An IRS notice may also state that more information is needed to support the figures on a tax return, or that the return is missing a required form or schedule. In those cases, it is important to respond to the notice by submitting the requested materials promptly. If you have questions, call the number in the upper right corner of the letter.

If you are unsure what an IRS notice means or how to respond to it, a tax professional can help you determine the appropriate next steps. Remember also that if someone claiming to represent the IRS contacts you on social media, it is a scam. Immediately delete the message and do not click on any links. The IRS does not initiate contact through social media or text messages.

Now That Tax Season Has Passed: A Few Smart Moves for May

With the April tax deadline behind us, May is a great time to take care of a few follow-up tax items and get organized for the rest of the year.

✔️ Filed an extension? Remember, an extension gives you more time to FILE — not more time to PAY. For most individual returns, the extended federal filing deadline is October 15, 2026, but any tax owed was generally due in April.

✔️ Already filed? Save a copy of your return and review your refund or balance due. Also make note of any major life changes such as:• New job• Marriage• Home purchase• New dependent• Side income• Retirement contributions

These changes can affect your 2026 tax situation.

✔️ Self-employed or have investment/rental income? Keep estimated tax deadlines in mind. The next 2026 federal estimated tax payment deadline is June 15, 2026.

✔️ Review your withholding. If your refund or balance due was larger than expected, it may be time to update your Form W-4. The IRS Tax Withholding Estimator can help determine if changes are needed.

✔️ Found an error on your filed return? Don’t panic. Many issues can be corrected by filing an amended return. In general, refund claims must be filed within:• 3 years from the original filing date, or• 2 years from the date the tax was paid — whichever is later.

A little attention now can make next tax season much easier.
