Many people mistakenly believe that Medicare covers long term care. (It does pay for the first 100 days of skilled nursing care following a hospitalization, but nothing more.) Medicaid — the federal health program for the poor — covers skilled nursing care for lower-income seniors, but does not pay for assisted living. Many middle-class seniors are forced to impoverish themselves by exhausting their hard-earned savings simply to qualify for Medicaid.

One illness can be financially catastrophic.

If you start taking Social Security at age 62, rather than waiting until your full retirement age (FRA), you can expect up to a 30% reduction in monthly benefits with lesser reductions as you approach FRA. Remember, FRA is no longer age 65. It now ranges from 66 to 67, depending on your date of birth (see your full retirement ageOpens in a new window). And your annual cost-of-living adjustment (COLA) is based on your benefit. So if you begin Social Security at 62, and start with reduced benefits, your COLA-adjusted benefit will be lower too.

It's tempting to take Social Security at 62, but if you can wait until your full retirement age or longer, you can increase your and your spouse's lifetime benefit.

About 7.5% of enrollees will have access to extra LTC or chronic condition benefits.

Long-term care (LTC) coverage can help ensure that we successfully care for this generation. LTC coverage helps to pay for services that many seniors will need as they age, including board and care in a residential home; the support of a caregiver who would help with daily activities such as bathing, dressing and eating; and care for long-lasting or recurring illnesses.

America is aging. By 2030, 1 in every 5 Americans will be a senior. And by 2040, more than 14 million Americans will be 85 or older. This creates unique ch

“This high cost of care can all too often cause people to exhaust their savings and rely on Medicaid, the largest public payer for LTSS,” the report said. “Although the cost of care varies greatly across the states, LTSS—especially nursing facility care—is unaffordable for most middle-income families. For the cost of one year of nursing facility care, a person could pay for three years of home care or five years of adult day services.”

The cost of nursing facility care is out of reach for many middle-income families, which can lead to dependence on Medicaid for long-term care, according to the AARP’s Across the States 2018 report. The report offers a profile of long-term services and supports (LTSS) in the U.S., using a range of...

On June 19, 2018, the U.S. Department of Labor expanded access to affordable health coverage options for small businesses and their employees through Association Health Plans. AHP's work by allowing a group of people, small business owners, self-employed individuals, etc., who are geographically similar, to band together to obtain health care as if they were one, single larger employer. And while there is a buzz surrounding the Association Health Plans or AHPs, no one is talking about the Small Business Special Enrollment Period (SEP) that is available to employers with 1-50 waged employees, which may be an even better option for individuals and small business owners.

Association Health Plans work by allowing a group of people, small business owners, self-employed individuals, etc., who are geographically similar, to band together to obtain health care as if they were one, single larger employer.
