Kids aren't the only things that outgrow their systems.

Today my youngest and I are shopping for summer clothes and supplies for his first church camp. Apparently he decided to grow several inches almost overnight!

Businesses often experience the same thing. The bookkeeping process that worked when you first started may not work once you add employees, increase sales, launch new programs, or manage multiple revenue streams.

If your financial systems feel stretched, it may be time for a review.

Growth is exciting—but it works best when your books can keep up.

Professional development isn't just for students.

Today I'm spending the day at Challenge A Tutor Orientation preparing for the upcoming homeschool year.

One thing I love about both education and accounting is that there is always something new to learn. Whether it's teaching students how to think critically or helping organizations understand their financial reports, growth happens when we continue investing in knowledge.

The best advisors are lifelong learners.

What skill are you working to improve this year?

The best systems don't happen by accident.

Today is full of mentoring, piano lessons, and baseball practice, but I'm also spending time behind the scenes helping clients build financial systems that actually work.

One project I'm currently tackling is automating a client's reporting process. What once required spreadsheets, manual updates, and extra time can often be streamlined into a process that delivers the information leaders need with far less effort.

Good bookkeeping isn't just about compliance—it's about creating systems that support better decisions.

What is one repetitive task in your business that you wish could be automated?

Summer weekends don't always have to be packed with plans.

After a busy spring, I'm looking forward to a slower pace this weekend—checking on the garden, spending time with family, and enjoying a little extra daylight.

As a small business owner, I've learned that periods of rest are just as important as periods of growth. Taking time to recharge helps us return to our work with fresh perspective and renewed energy.

I hope you find a little time this weekend to enjoy the things that matter most.

Happy Saturday!

Not every tax or bookkeeping issue is caused by a mistake.

Sometimes the challenge is simply getting systems to communicate correctly.

This week has included helping untangle a state filing issue where the return information isn't being received properly—even though everything appears correct on the taxpayer's side.

Many tax and compliance challenges involve troubleshooting processes, following up with agencies, and finding where the communication breakdown occurred.

Persistence and attention to detail often make all the difference.

One thing I appreciate about homeschooling is that learning doesn't stop when the school year ends.

With a rainy weekend in the forecast, we may find ourselves making a trip to the library to stock up on books and activities for the kids. It's a good reminder that growth often happens in the quieter seasons—whether we're talking about education, business, or personal finances.

The same principle applies to bookkeeping and financial management. The time spent organizing, learning, and preparing behind the scenes is what helps things run smoothly when life gets busy again.

I'm reading C.S. Lewis Mere Christianity this week. What are you reading this summer?

Rainy days tend to slow things down a bit around here.

While the weather may keep us indoors some days, it's often a great time to catch up on the administrative tasks that get pushed aside during busier seasons—reviewing financial reports, organizing records, and making sure everything is in order before small issues become bigger ones.

A little attention now can save a lot of time and stress later.

What rainy-day project are you tackling this week?

One piece of mail can cause a lot of anxiety.

If you've received a letter from the IRS, don't panic—and don't ignore it.

Many notices are simply requests for clarification, missing information, or corrections that can be resolved with the right response. The sooner you understand what the letter is asking, the more options you typically have available.

If you're unsure what a notice means, getting guidance early can help you avoid unnecessary penalties, interest, and stress.

The garden is teaching similar lessons business often does:

🌿Growth happens long before you can see the results.

🌿Seeds need attention before they produce anything visible.

🌿Financial systems work much the same way. Consistent bookkeeping, good recordkeeping, and regular review may not feel exciting day-to-day, but they create the foundation for healthy growth over time.

🌿The small things done consistently are often what produce the best harvest.

Wishing everyone a productive and joy-filled week, whether you're tending spreadsheets or tomatoes...or like me, both.

This week has included bookkeeping consultations, non-profit financial reporting, tax planning discussions, piano lessons, baseball fun, gardening, and a continuing a construction project at home.

One thing I've learned as a small business owner is that most of us are balancing a lot of responsibilities at once.

Whether you're leading a nonprofit leader, running a small business, or managing a household, good systems create room for what matters most.

Wishing everyone a productive and enjoyable weekend.
