Ever walk away for “just a second”… and come back to a puddle? ☕️🙃
That was me in Houston today. I pressed the button, thought I was set, came back to a mess everywhere, and no coffee.

This week I realized that’s exactly what’s happening with so many teachers, federal employees, and veterans I’ve been meeting with. They press the “retirement button” — TSP, 401(k), stocks — and walk away thinking they’re safe.

Meet Mary Jo. She’s 80 and still volunteers for the Red Cross.

Every week she helps families connect with their loved ones serving in the military.

She gave a history lesson while we waited for the swearing in ceremony for each service.

Mary Jo described serving in Vietnam as a Doughnut Dolly then laughed, “I never saw a doughnut!”

It required a four-year degree. Then, she and other women in pairs of two, were sent to listen to the men as they processed their experience.

Sometimes they would have large groups so they would lead the men a series of games designed to help them scream and let out their energy and feelings.

She was humble with a positive attitude. I can see myself like her in a couple decades.

If you have a family member serving in any branch of the military and there’s an emergency, you can call the Red Cross.

The command wherever your family is posted will get messages from the Red Cross and then decide what they’re willing to do for that service member.

The last few months of my dad’s life he couldn’t understand why dying “was so hard,” why he couldn’t “just go.” Today it makes sense. I’m standing in line to see my son swear in to the Army. My dad’s funeral and memorial service happened right before my son graduated. When my uncle shared about our lineage of 5 generations of government and military service, it inspired my son. Dad, thanks for your service. Thanks for selflessly hanging in there so the timing of your exit was when it mattered most to your legacy.
