Regarding the member webinar for RSSAs: Become a Financial Literacy Speaker presented by The Society for Financial Awareness (SOFA) on Tuesday June 11th at 1 PM ET:
It has been my experience that these “educational non-profits” are nothing more than a front for for-profit advisors wishing to get in front of groups they cannot get in front of on their own. Often companies and other organizations have a policy against exposing their members to sales pitches from for-profit, often commission-based, adviser salespeople. Organizations like SOFA are set up as a way around these barriers and are effectively a trojan horse into these groups. Advisors join the non-profit by making a “contribution” and in exchange are then allowed to hold themselves out as “educators” for the non-profit, free to effectively market themselves to groups they would otherwise have been shut out of.
What vetting has NARSSA made of this organization? I am very concerned that our association with a group like this could discredit NARSSA and harm our standing in the eyes of consumers and within the financial planning community.
