What Your Will Does Not Mention
‘Your Estate Love Letter’
Passing your life’s work to benefactors and/or heirs is more than just moving money… There are life lessons, quick tips, relationships, wisdom, personal information, and last words that money cannot buy for your legacy. This list is not exhaustive but may be items that will stand out for you to discuss with your loved ones while there is time to do so that are not explicitly stated in your living will. These are difficult conversation to be had, but this list will help ensure that you mention everything you need to.
We suggest writing your own personal estate ‘love letter’ to your family and benefactors.
Here are several items you may not have thought about!
First & foremost – your estate attorney’s name, address, and contact information!
Where can your passwords for important information be found?
Where can your personal information be found? (birth certificate, social security number, passports, other digital records that may be needed to settle your estate)
Institutions that hold your retirement accounts, life insurance policies, and other liquid investments (contact numbers, emails, who to speak with)
Do you have cash or personal items protected that no one knows about?
Who is your ‘go to’ for spiritual guidance?
Who is your ‘go to’ for marriage or life guidance?
Who is your ‘go to’ for financial guidance?
Who is one individual you would trust with your life?
Any business professionals you trust and respect to work with your children/grandchildren? (real estate agent, mortgage lenders, auto mechanics, contractors, tax professional, investment professional, attorneys, etc.)
Do you have any important family or medical history that needs to be addressed?
Are there any special instructions for family members or loved pets that you may have been taking care of?
The 2 most important life lessons you have learned thus far…
Finally, this is an opportunity to address your family. Write a short paragraph filled with whatever you would like – your love & affections, goodbyes, your last words.
