Job Seeker Series

If you are unable to make it in for an interview: cancel the appointment, ask to reschedule, or call and notify them you will be late. Employers keep a record of their interviews, keep that in mind.

TIP: Make sure to communicate ahead of time!

**Why this is important:
This is the key to any employment opportunity because employers are looking for candidates that are going to tell them ahead of time what days they need off or call in if they are sick, and utilize the skill of calling ahead in their position with their company or organization.

Say you find your dream job with an organization in Lafayette. 6 months ago you did not show and did not communicate ahead of time for 2 scheduled interviews. Today, you put in your application along with 150 other applicants. Now a week later, you are one of the top four applicants for this position and you are the only one with a historical record of absences. The organization could choose to go with the other three applicants due to the absences and you will have missed out on the opportunity of your dreams.

Moral of the story: show to the interview for the possible positions ahead, call in advance, or cancel the interview.

Disclaimer: The story above is the representation of
an idea of something that could happen and does not
reflect the actual steps in eliminating a candidate.

**Appropriate response suggestion:

Dear {Employer/Hiring Manager},

Thank you for taking the time to schedule an interview. {Explain the situation: This morning I was struck by lightening and will not be able to make it in today at our scheduled time.} Would you be willing to reschedule for a later date?

Thank you for your time, I look forward to hearing from you.

Sincerely,

{Candidate Name}

Pro Tip #5
Job Seeker Series

Read the Job Description. Employers are giving you the information that you are looking for when interviewing for a new position.

When reading a job description, answer the following questions:
1. Are they offering a wage you are comfortable with?
2. Do they offer any additional benefits?
3. Are the responsibilities mentioned something you would
enjoy doing?
4. Do you fit the requirements?

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
When reading a job post it will tell you the items they are looking for in a candidate.
For example, if you read:
•Obtain a H.S. Diploma or GED or relevant related work experience.
•Be in adequate physical Health to perform the job tasks required, position requires a Fit for Duty physical.
•Have a valid driver’s license, good driving record and proof of vehicle insurance.
Then you know the following:
•You need a Diploma/GED or relevant experience
•You will need to complete a physical
•You need a valid Driver's License and vehicle insurance
Reading a job description allows you as a job seeker to see if this position will be a good fit for your needs and whether a company can offer you the benefits, wages, and interests you are seeking in a new role.
Pro Tip #2
Job Seeker Series
Interviews are important. This is your moment to shine!
Necessities for Success:
~Appropriate Attire
Dress for success! This could be jeans and a nice shirt for some positions; other positions may require dress pants, a nice shirt, and closed toe shoes. We advise against wearing pajamas.
~Supportive Documents
Any interview you attend, bring a resume. This will show an interviewer that you are prepared to talk about yourself and have supportive documentation for the items you discuss. Other items you could bring are letters of reference, cover letters, or projects you have completed.
~Positive Attitude
Bring a smile! You may have had a bad morning, worked a long night shift, or sat through hours of traffic, and that is okay. When you step through the front door you need to focus on why you are there. Think positive.
~Questions to ask Interviewer
Job descriptions may not answer all of your questions, so come prepared. Question topics- Hours, Pay, Benefits, Duties, Supervisory Responsibilities, Job Location or Work Environment, and Next Steps.
~Interviewer Questions
Be prepared for anything, and think of all you have accomplished. Tell the interviewer about your professional or work related experiences so they can better understand your skills.
EA Staffing can help you find a full-time or part-time position. Come in today and ace that interview!
