This Manufacturing Month, we're looking back at one of the most remarkable technologies in our history: the tunnel kilns that helped shape a new era of industry at Kohler.
Installed in the 1920s, these massive kiln systems stretched the length of a semi-truck and reached temperatures of nearly 1,300°C to transform clay into the strong, durable vitreous china we became known for. Products traveled through the kiln on a cable-car system for up to three days, moving through multiple temperature zones designed to achieve different finishes and colors. Decades later, those same kilns would help usher in bold new hues and even fire large-scale sculptures for our Arts/Industry residency program.
Today's kilns can complete the process in just 16-18 hours and utilize 9 times more burners with significantly greater efficiency. But the spirit of manufacturing remains the same.
Here’s to the generations of technology and craftspeople who turned heat, precision and innovation into a legacy that still burns bright today.
