πŸš€ Thinking about starting your own business?

A great idea is just the beginning. Before you officially launch, there are a few important financial and operational boxes to check.

Save this startup checklist for when you’re ready to get started:

βœ… Choose the right business structure
βœ… Register your business and obtain necessary licenses
βœ… Apply for an EIN
βœ… Open a separate business bank account
βœ… Set up your accounting and bookkeeping
βœ… Create a realistic startup budget
βœ… Understand your tax responsibilities
βœ… Plan for cash flow and ongoing expenses
βœ… Determine how you’ll pay yourself
βœ… Put the right financial systems in place from day one

Taking the time to build a strong foundation now can help you avoid costly surprises and make smarter decisions as your business grows.

πŸ’° One of the best financial advantages teens have? Time.

Helping kids develop smart money habits early can build a foundation that benefits them for years to come. And those lessons don't have to start with complicated financial concepts.

A few ways parents can help make money lessons stick:

πŸ’¬ Make it relatable. Start with things they're already interested in and use real-world examples to talk about saving, spending and investing.

⏳ Show them the power of time. Even small amounts saved consistently can grow significantly over the years. Helping teens understand compound growth early can make a lasting impression.

πŸ“‰ Let mistakes become lessons. Not every financial decision will be the right one. Instead of focusing on the mistake, talk about what happened and what they might do differently next time.

🀝 Share your own experiences. Talk openly about financial decisions you've made, including both the good ones and the ones you wish you'd handled differently.

Financial literacy is a lifelong skill, and the earlier those conversations begin, the better prepared young adults can be to make informed decisions about their future.

Have questions about how saving, investing, taxes and long-term financial planning fit into your family's bigger financial picture? Contact our team. We're here to help you plan with confidence.

πŸ“’ IRS Update: New Overtime Tax Deduction

The IRS has released updated guidance on the new federal deduction for qualified overtime compensation.

Here are a few key things to know:

πŸ’° Eligible taxpayers may deduct up to $12,500 in qualified overtime compensation, or $25,000 for married couples filing jointly.

πŸ“Š The deduction begins to phase out for taxpayers with modified adjusted gross income above $150,000, or $300,000 for joint filers.

βœ… The deduction is available whether you itemize deductions or take the standard deduction.

⚠️ Not all overtime qualifies. Generally, the deduction applies to overtime compensation required under the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA).

The IRS has also provided updated guidance for employees and employers on eligibility, reporting, withholding and other requirements.

As with any new tax provision, the details matter.
πŸ“²Contact our firm if you have questions about the new overtime deduction or would like guidance on how it may apply to your individual or business tax situation.

πŸ’» The IRS is making it easier for businesses to access important federal tax information online.

The IRS continues to expand its Business Tax Account, giving eligible business owners and organizations secure, convenient access to more of their federal tax information.

Depending on eligibility and business type, users may be able to:

βœ… View balances and recent payments
βœ… Make or schedule federal tax payments
βœ… Access certain tax transcripts and IRS notices
βœ… Verify business information on file with the IRS
βœ… Download EIN verification documentation
βœ… Review existing payment plan information

While these online tools can make it easier to access information and handle routine tax matters, they don't replace the value of proactive tax planning and professional guidance.

Your CPA can help you understand your tax obligations, respond appropriately to IRS notices, identify planning opportunities and make informed decisions throughout the year.

πŸ“Œ Have questions about your business taxes, an IRS notice or planning for what's ahead? Our team is here to provide guidance.

🚨 Think before you click. Phishing scams are getting harder to spot.

The IRS and Security Summit partners are warning taxpayers and tax professionals about increasingly sophisticated phishing schemes designed to steal passwords, financial information, Social Security numbers and other sensitive data.

⚠️ Five scams to watch for:

🎣 Phishing & smishing β€” Fraudulent emails or texts designed to get you to click a link, download a file or share personal information.

🎯 Spear phishing β€” Highly targeted messages created to look legitimate and specifically tailored to you or your business.

πŸ“§ Clone phishing β€” Copies of legitimate emails with links or attachments replaced by malicious ones.

πŸ‹ Whaling β€” Scams targeting executives, business leaders, payroll teams and others with access to valuable information.

πŸ‘€ Fake new-client inquiries β€” Scammers pose as prospective clients and send malicious links or attachments to tax professionals.

One of the best defenses? Slow down. Be cautious of unexpected messages, urgent requests, unfamiliar attachments and email addresses or website domains that are just slightly different from the real thing.

πŸ” Protect your accounts with strong security practices, including multi-factor authentication, updated antivirus software, regular backups and data encryption.

When something doesn’t look right, don’t click.

πŸ‘¨β€πŸ‘©β€πŸ‘§β€πŸ‘¦ Thinking about hiring a family member to work in your business? It could come with more than just an extra set of hands.

Whether it's your spouse helping manage the books or your children pitching in after school, hiring family members may offer valuable tax advantagesβ€”if it's structured correctly.

Here are a few things to keep in mind:

βœ… Children working in a family business may qualify for certain payroll tax advantages, depending on your business structure.

βœ… Spouses working together have unique tax and reporting options that may simplify filing and maximize benefits.

βœ… Family members must perform legitimate work, receive reasonable compensation, and be paid through the proper payroll process.

Every family business is different, and the rules vary based on your entity type and who you're hiring. A little planning now can help you stay compliant while taking advantage of available tax-saving opportunities.

πŸ“ž Considering hiring a family member? Contact our team to discuss the best approach for your business.
