What's the Story on Gift Taxes?

In brief, the IRS is not imposing a tax on the sweater you gave to Uncle Arnold for Christmas or those Amazon gift cards you gave your nieces. The IRS only starts taxing gifts when they surpass a certain dollar limit each year and during your lifetime. And gift taxes generally only hit the very wealthy.

Do You Know Your Debt-to-Income Ratio?

Applying for a mortgage? Your debt-to-income ratio is a key number. Lenders care about how much money you spend each month on your credit cards, student loans and auto loans. The less of a financial burden your monthly debts are, the more likely you are to not miss any mortgage payments.

Lenders look favorably on borrowers who are most likely to make their mortgage payments on time each month—so they look at your debt relative to your income. Click through to learn more about how this ratio could improve your odds of qualifying for a mortgage loan.

Don't Play Games With the IRS

The internet is full of odd — and incorrect — tax advice, including urban legends on how to put one over on the agency. Ignore them. To see just how unamused the IRS can be, come up with what the agency calls "frivolous tax arguments." The tax collector has a response for every specious reason you can create for failing to file or pay taxes.

It can be a forgotten aspect of taxation, but with few exceptions, fringe benefits must be included in an employee's gross income and are subject to tax withholding and employment taxes. Click through to make sure you're in compliance.

How to Recognize a Scam

Nearly everyone has received an email, text or phone call that sounds legitimate but is a scam. Scammers have gotten quite sophisticated, and even savvy individuals have been taken in. Call center fraud occurs when scammers call someone impersonating tech support or government agencies. Another surprise was that people in their 30s filed the most fraud complaints in 2022.

A recent report found there was more than $10 billion lost to online scams in 2022. Anyone can be vulnerable, and everyone should be aware of the red flags that should cause them concern. Click through to learn how to protect yourself.

The IRS Is Pushing Its ID.me Accounts

ID.me simplifies how individuals prove and share their identities online. The idea is that you'll have to verify your identity once and not have to reverify your credentials every time you visit a new website, similar to how a driver's license works in the physical world. Once you're verified, proof of your identity goes with you everywhere.

To access the IRS going forward, taxpayers will need to create an ID.me account, a private security system that can be used for a variety of sites. Click through to learn more about the use of biometric verification to confirm your identity with the tax agency.
