Happy 2025 Income tax season!
Did you have overtime during 2025? Did you purchase a new vehicle with a loan? If so, please include that information with your tax return info when you get it to me.
Thanks
Jami Goldstrohm

OBBBA creates a federal income tax deduction for qualified overtime compensation limited to $12,500 for single filers and $25,000 for joint filers, though this deduction begins to phase out once your modified adjusted gross income is more than $150,000 (or $300,000 for joint filers).

This overtime deduction is only available to employees who have the legal right to overtime pay. In other words, if an employee works on a farm and is not eligible for overtime pay, but his employer pays him overtime anyway, he does not get the deduction. This provision does tax all overtime pay; it just creates a deduction for certain individuals who are paid overtime.

OBBBA creates a new deduction for interest on a loan for the purchase of a new vehicle. Final assembly of the vehicle must take place in the U.S. Once your modified adjusted gross income reaches $100,000, the deduction starts to phase out and is totally phased out if your income is more than $150,000. For married filing jointly, the deduction starts to phase out at $200,000 and is totally eliminated once your modified adjusted gross income reaches $250,000.

Starting in 2025, taxpayers can deduct up to $10,000 in interest paid on qualifying vehicle loans, subject to specific eligibility criteria.
Overview of the Deduction
The vehicle interest tax deduction allows eligible taxpayers to deduct interest paid on loans for new vehicles purchased for personal use. This deduction is part of the One Big Beautiful Bill and applies to loans taken out after December 31, 2024, and before January 1, 2029. It is considered an above-the-line deduction, meaning you can claim it even if you take the standard deduction.
