Health concerns can sometimes make people assume they've waited too long to plan for long-term care.

There may be options worth exploring.

The national median cost of care in 2026 is over $135,000 per year.

Most people hear that number and focus on the cost.

I look at everything surrounding the cost.

RMDs.
Taxes.
Market volatility.
Retirement income.

And the healthy spouse who may still need income for years to come.
Thatโ€™s where things get complicated.

Because a care event rarely shows up by itself.

It usually arrives alongside other financial decisions that are already affecting retirement.

A plan that looks solid on paper can start feeling very different when multiple pressures hit at the same time.

Thatโ€™s why care planning isnโ€™t just about preparing for care.

Itโ€™s about making sure your overall retirement strategy can handle it.

If youโ€™re concerned about how changing care needs could affect your financial future, ๐—บ๐—ฒ๐˜€๐˜€๐—ฎ๐—ด๐—ฒ ๐˜‚๐˜€ ๐˜๐—ผ ๐˜€๐—ฐ๐—ต๐—ฒ๐—ฑ๐˜‚๐—น๐—ฒ ๐—ฎ ๐—ฐ๐—ผ๐—บ๐—ฝ๐—น๐—ถ๐—บ๐—ฒ๐—ป๐˜๐—ฎ๐—ฟ๐˜† ๐—–๐—ฎ๐—ฟ๐—ฒ ๐—–๐—ผ๐˜€๐˜ ๐—ฃ๐—น๐—ฎ๐—ป๐—ป๐—ถ๐—ป๐—ด ๐—ฅ๐—ฒ๐˜ƒ๐—ถ๐—ฒ๐˜„.

When care needs change, most people immediately start searching for costs.

How much is home care?
How much is memory care?
How much is assisted living?

Those are important questions.

But before you can answer how care will be paid for, it helps to understand what resources are already available.

Retirement accounts.
Insurance policies.
VA benefits.
Home equity.
Income sources.

When it comes from long-term care, people often focus on one number.

The cost of care.

But life rarely works that way.

Care costs may increase.

Everyday expenses may increase.

Insurance costs may increase.

Retirement income still needs to support the healthy spouse.

Thatโ€™s why many families arenโ€™t worried about a single expense.

Theyโ€™re worried about how all of those expenses work together.

A care event doesnโ€™t happen in isolation.

It becomes part of a much larger financial picture.

The challenge isnโ€™t understanding one cost.

Itโ€™s understanding how multiple financial pressures may affect the future youโ€™ve worked hard to build.

Most people donโ€™t spend decades saving for retirement because theyโ€™re excited about spreadsheets.

They save because retirement represents something.

More freedom.
More choices.
More time with the people they care about.

Then life introduces a challenge that wasnโ€™t part of the original plan.

A spouse needs care.

Health changes.

New expenses begin showing up.

The conversation quickly becomes bigger than money.

People start asking:
Can we still do the things we planned to do?
Can we still retire the way we imagined?
Can we still support the person we love without sacrificing everything else?

Those are difficult questions because there isnโ€™t a one-size-fits-all answer.

Every familyโ€™s situation is different.

The challenge is understanding how changing care needs fit into the future youโ€™re still trying to create.

Have you ever had to adjust a major life plan because of something unexpected?

When care needs begin changing, itโ€™s easy to focus on the immediate expense.

How much will care cost?
How will we pay for it?
How long might it last?

Those questions matter.

But they arenโ€™t always the most important questions.

Many spouses are thinking about retirement income.

The healthy spouse.
Future flexibility.

The choices they still want available years from now.

Thatโ€™s why the goal isnโ€™t simply finding a way to pay for care.

The goal is protecting what matters beyond the care itself.

The spouse who may depend on that income.

The retirement lifestyle youโ€™ve spent years building.

The ability to make future decisions from a position of strength rather than pressure.

A care event can affect much more than a budget.

It can affect the future youโ€™re trying to preserve.

If youโ€™re wondering how changing care needs could affect your retirement plans.

A 401(k) from a former employer.

An IRA opened years ago.

Accounts accumulated throughout your career.

They're still there after you stop working.

The difference is that their role begins to change.

The focus shifts from building wealth to creating income, managing distributions, and making informed financial decisions.

Should accounts stay where they are?

Should they be consolidated?

How will they support future income needs?

How might future RMDs affect those decisions?

The important thing isn't finding a universal answer.

It's understanding which options make the most sense for your goals, income needs, tax situation, and long-term plans.

That's why these conversations often become more important after your working years are behind you.

If you have questions about old accounts, IRAs, 401(k)s, or future RMD planning, message us.

We're happy to point you in the right direction.

The S&P 500 has hit a record high 23 times this year, crossing 7,600 for the first time ever. That should feel like great news. For a lot of people close to retirement, it doesn't, because a rising balance isn't the same as reliable income.

Fidelity found half of 401(k) savers 70+ are holding more market risk than their own plan recommends. Only 5.7% adjusted anything.

Here's why timing matters: same $1,000,000 saved, same $50,000 withdrawal, two retirees. The only difference is which year the downturn hits. One ends with $3 million. One runs out completely. That risk isn't something you just live with, it's solvable.

Social Security only covers about 35% of pre-retirement income, well under the 80% most people need. Guaranteed income fills that gap. It won't
replace your whole portfolio, but it covers the essentials, so a bad market year stays a paper loss, not a spending crisis.

Households with guaranteed income beyond Social Security spend up to 44% more in retirement, according to J.P. Morgan.

The reason isn't the market. It's that fewer than half of Americans know how to turn savings into an actual paycheck they can count on.

That's the whole problem in one sentence: people know how to save, but almost nobody was taught how to convert. Guaranteed income is that conversion, it takes a portion of what you've built and turns it into income that shows up regardless of what the S&P does.

92% of Americans said a guaranteed income product would genuinely help them retire the way they want.

That's not a fringe opinion, that's almost everyone agreeing on the answer. The gap is that most people never sit down and actually build it.

If sentiment has shifted for you too, that conversation is the next step, not more waiting to see what the market does.
