When you retire, every day is Saturday.

And nobody tells you what that actually costs.

I say this to every client I sit down with, because most people plan for one paycheck in retirement. Maybe two if they're lucky.

But here's what I've learned after 40 years of doing this:

You actually need two very different paychecks.

𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗳𝗶𝗿𝘀𝘁 𝗼𝗻𝗲 𝗰𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘀 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗿𝗵𝗲𝗮𝗱 — bills, insurance, the non-negotiables. That one needs to be rock solid. Coming in whether the market goes up or crashes.

𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝘀𝗲𝗰𝗼𝗻𝗱 𝗼𝗻𝗲 𝗰𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘀 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗹𝗶𝗳𝗲 — travel, golf, the grandkids, the things you actually worked for. That one needs to be there too. And it usually isn't.

Most families don't realize there's a problem until they're already in it.

And by then, the best options are gone.

The challenge isn't knowing care is expensive. Everyone knows that.

It's not knowing what happens before the bills arrive.

Who steps in first, and how long can they realistically keep going?

What changes financially the moment they do?

Which assets are actually accessible? Which ones aren't?

These aren't hypothetical questions.

They're the decisions that determine whether your family gets through this, or gets buried by it.

I came across a comment recently that stopped me.

"Care is $12,000 a month. They have $500,000 saved. How does my mom pay her own bills, insurance, property taxes, her own medical care, once that money is gone?"

At $12,000 a month, $500,000 is gone in under 4 years.

And the spouse left at home? She's still there. Still has bills. Still has a life to fund.

That's the part nobody plans for.

Most retirement plans are built around one question: do we have enough?

The right question is: is what we have structured to protect both of us?

Having $500,000 saved is not the same as having $500,000 protected.

The difference is structure, how it's positioned, which accounts get drawn from first, and whether it was designed to cover a care event without leaving the other spouse exposed.

Most plans aren't built for that. They can be.
