🚨 Tax Relief Update for Washington State 🚨

The IRS is providing relief to individuals and businesses impacted by the severe storms, straight-line winds, flooding, landslides, and mudslides that began on Dec. 9, 2025. If you’re in an affected county, you now have until May 1, 2026 to file 2025 federal tax returns and make payments.

This extension covers individual and business taxes, estimated payments, and even 2025 IRA & HSA contributions. Eligible areas include multiple counties such as Benton, Chelan, Clallam, Grays Harbor, Jefferson, King, Kittitas, Lewis, Mason, Pierce, Samish, Skagit, Snohomish, Thurston, Wahkiakum, Whatcom, and Yakima.

Good news: the IRS will automatically apply relief for most taxpayers in these areas.

⏰ Time is running out, Washington!

An estimated 37,500 taxpayers in Washington state still haven’t filed their 2022 tax return and that could mean missing out on money that’s rightfully theirs.

According to the Internal Revenue Service, there’s $1.2 billion in unclaimed refunds nationwide for tax year 2022.

The median refund? $686 and many could receive even more, especially if eligible for valuable credits like the Earned Income Tax Credit (worth up to $6,935).

📅 Deadline: April 15, 2026After that, unclaimed refunds become property of the U.S. Treasury.

💡 Don’t leave money on the table:• Request missing forms (W-2s, 1099s, etc.)• Use IRS “Get Transcript Online” for quick access• File your 2022 return ASAP

⚠️ Keep in mind: refunds may be reduced if you owe taxes, student loans, or child support and you must be up to date on more recent filings.

👉 If you lived or worked in Washington in 2022, check your status today. This is your money, claim it before it’s gone.

A lot of small businesses think hiring a tax advisor = automatic tax savings.

It doesn’t.

The real issue? Not being proactive.

Too many business owners take a hands-off approach and expect results… but tax savings don’t work like that.

They come from:
– Ongoing conversations
– Proactive planning meetings
– Bringing your advisor into decisions before they happen
– Actually implementing the right strategies

If you’re only talking to your tax advisor once a year, you’re already behind.

The businesses that actually save on taxes stay engaged, plan ahead, and treat their advisor like a partner—not a once-a-year transaction.

📣 Washington Small Businesses: File Your DOR Returns Even If You Have $0

If you’re registered in Washington, you likely have a filing requirement with the Washington State Department of Revenue even if:

✔️ You had no income✔️ You owe no tax✔️ You didn’t operate this period
Do NOT wait for DOR to contact you.

Here’s why being proactive protects you:

🔹 Late penalties add up – Even $0 returns must be filed.🔹 They can assess estimates – If you don’t file, DOR may estimate what they believe you owe.🔹 Tax warrants can be issued – Continued non-response can lead to liens, wage garnishments, or bank levies.🔹 You may become personally liable – Especially for unpaid sales tax.

🚨 Important: Sales tax is “trust fund” money.
When you collect sales tax from customers, it is NOT your business income, you are holding it on behalf of the state. Using those funds for expenses and failing to remit them can trigger:
• Personal liability for owners/officers• Collection action against your bank account• In severe cases, criminal investigation

Most enforcement actions happen only after multiple notices and lack of response but once it escalates, DOR has strong collection authority.

The good news?If you file on time, communicate early, and set up payment plans when needed, you greatly reduce your risk.

Silence triggers enforcement.

Proactive compliance protects your business.
