IRS launches new web page to streamline tax fraud and scam reporting

IR-2026-26, Feb. 26, 2026

WASHINGTON — The Internal Revenue Service today announced the launch of a new web page that allows taxpayers to confidentially report suspected tax fraud, scams, evasion, or other tax-related illegal activities, as well as internal-facing improvements that will enhance how referrals are used to stop illegal activity.

“Improvements to the IRS fraud reporting system make reporting suspected wrongdoing easier and simpler and will address historic challenges that had prevented the IRS from making maximum use of the referrals it receives,” said IRS Chief Executive Officer Frank J. Bisignano. “By reporting suspected tax fraud or scams, taxpayers play an important role in uncovering fraud and supporting the integrity of the nation’s tax system.”

The new web page consolidates multiple IRS fraud-reporting options into a single, centralized location, making it easier for taxpayers to report suspicious activity. The web page can be found by selecting the new ‘Report Fraud’ button on the IRS.gov homepage or at IRS.gov/SubmitATip. Taxpayers are encouraged to report suspected tax-related wrongdoing as soon as possible to help the IRS address fraud and noncompliance.

Michigan Treasury Processes More Than 1.1 Million Returns as 2026 Tax Season Accelerates
Taxpayers Reminded to Wait 4-6 Weeks Before Checking Status Online

LANSING, Mich. – The Michigan Department of Treasury has processed more than 1.1 million individual income tax returns and issued approximately $565 million in refunds since the 2026 filing season opened on Jan. 26.

To date, Treasury has received over 1.6 million returns, which is an increase of more than 45 percent compared to this time last year. The filing season opened on the same day as the Internal Revenue Service, prompting strong early participation from Michigan taxpayers.

“Most taxpayers can expect to receive their state tax refund within Treasury’s typical four-to-six-week timeframe after receiving confirmation that their return has been accepted,” said Deputy State Treasurer Kavita Kale, who oversees Treasury’s Revenue Services programs. “Those state tax returns that claim multiple credits or requiring additional verification take a little bit more time to process. We are working to ensure taxpayers who file a return receive their refund as fast as practical.”

Many early filers submit more complex returns at the beginning of tax season, contributing to slower average turnaround times for some taxpayers.

Despite the significant increase in filings, Treasury continues to work diligently through the high volume using its newly modernized individual income tax processing system. The upgraded system includes new accuracy checks and updated procedures designed to ensure every return is processed correctly and securely.

Taxpayers are encouraged to check the status of their refund through Michigan Treasury eServices or through the department’s automated phone system. Please note repeated calls to the contact center may increase call waiting times.

Prepare to file in 2026: Get Ready for tax season with key updates, essential tips
IR-2026-01, Jan. 6, 2026

WASHINGTON — With the 2026 filing season quickly approaching, the Internal Revenue Service is urging taxpayers to take a few simple steps now to prepare for filing their 2025 federal income tax returns. Visit Get Ready on IRS.gov for checklists, updates and no-cost filing options.

One of the most important steps taxpayers can take is to access their IRS Individual Online Account. IRS Individual Online Accounts are available 24/7, to view account information, make payments, manage communication preferences and protect tax information.

Use direct deposit

Due to the presidential executive order, Modernizing Payments To and From America’s Bank Account the IRS is phasing out paper tax refund checks. The IRS encourages taxpayers who do not have a bank account to open one so they can receive refunds by direct deposit.

Review new 2025 tax law changes

Recent legislation, such as the provisions in the One, Big, Beautiful Bill, includes several new deductions and credits that may reduce tax bills or increase refunds. Beginning in 2025, to be eligible to claim certain credits for other dependents, the taxpayer and their spouse, if filing jointly, must have valid Social Security numbers or Individual Taxpayer Identification Numbers issued on or before the due date of their returns (including extensions).

New Trump Accounts for eligible children

Parents, guardians and other authorized individuals will be able to open Trump Accounts, a new retirement savings vehicle for children under the age of 18 with a valid SSN. A pilot program contribution of $1,000 will be available for children who are U.S. citizens and born from Jan. 1, 2025, to Dec. 31, 2028. Visit trumpaccounts.gov for details.

Income from payment apps and online sales

All income from part-time work, gig activities or sales of goods and services is taxable. Form 1099-K, Payment Card and Third Party Network Transactions, will be issued by payment card companies for any amount and by payment apps and online marketplaces when payments exceed $20,000 and more than 200 transactions occur for the year.

Digital assets reporting requirements

Taxpayers who bought, sold or received digital assets, including cryptocurrency, stablecoins or NFT, must report those transactions. Some taxpayers may receive Form 1099-DA from brokers. Regardless, all taxpayers must answer the digital asset question on Form 1040 and report any related income, gains, or losses. Visit Digital Assets for more information.

Get ready now

Take a few steps today, reviewing tax law changes, gathering documents and using online tools, to help ensure a smoother less stressful experience when filing taxes in 2026.

Senators Express Serious Concerns That the Internal Revenue Service is Not Prepared for the Upcoming Tax Filing Season
A group of seventeen Democratic senators warned in a letter that the IRS isn’t prepared to handle the upcoming tax filing season. The letter, sent to Treasury Secretary and Acting IRS Commissioner Scott Bessent and IRS Chief of Taxpayer Services Ken Corbin, warned that taxpayers will likely face delays in getting their tax refunds due to the Trump administration’s IRS workforce cuts and the added pressure to implement the Republicans’ tax law. The senators also asked for a briefing by Jan. 12 on whether the tax filing season will start on time and whether the agency would hire enough workers for telephone service, compliance, modernization, and customer service.

Is Social Security going to be taxed in 2025?
With the new tax law, Social Security income continues to be taxable, but an additional deduction for seniors may help offset what is owed. Under the new law, taxpayers age 65 or older—and their spouses, if filing jointly—can each claim a $6,000 deduction for tax years 2025–2028.

Erroneous IRS Intent to Levy notices (09-11-25)

Spidell is aware of erroneous notices CP161, Notice of Balance Due, and CP504B, Notice of Intent to Levy, issued by the IRS. According to one IRS stakeholder liaison we have spoken with, as of right now these erroneous notices are impacting taxpayers filing Form 1041 and the Form 1120 series. The IRS is working on this issue and is planning an external communication on the issue soon.

We recommend that taxpayers who receive either a CP161 or CP504B in error call the IRS and request a hold on collection activities. When calling the IRS, reference “SERP Alert 25A0128” issued on May 2, 2025. That alert indicated that the IRS’s estimated tax penalty system incorrectly calculated penalties for many taxpayers.

We will send another Flash E-mail as soon as the IRS has issued its official communication on the matter.
