I was at my dentist this morning and learned of an incident I'd like to share. The office administrator received an email request to update direct deposit information from an employee. Upon confirming with the employee, it was determined the request was fraudulent. Fortunately, in this case the employer checked before changing the bank information and sending payroll.
Unfortunately, this is not the first time I've seen this happen. I would recommend as a best practice ALWAYS confirm any emailed changes with your employees. Face to face is best, but if that is not possible please call or text the employee to be sure they are the one making the request. Protect yourself- and your employees- from fraud!
