After Friday, March 29, 2024, all drop-offs will be on extension. Secure one of the remaining appointments in the first two weeks of April or drop off your documents for timely processing.

Taxpayers must report tip money as income on their tax returns.
Here's some information to help taxpayers report tip income so they don’t receive a surprise tax bill.

Taxpayers must include all tips they receive in their gross income: tips directly from customers, added using credit, debit, or gift cards, tip-splitting arrangements with other employees. The value of non-cash tips, such as tickets, passes or other items of value are also income and subject to tax.

Tax Tip 2022-23, February 10, 2022 — For those working in the service industry, tips are often a vital part of their income. Like most forms of income, tips are taxable.

Monday marked the first day Americans could file their 2021 taxes.

The Internal Revenue Service has already said there will be "challenges" due to the significant backlog of returns from last year.

As of December, there were still 6 million individual returns that needed to be processed.

This year, the Treasury Department is warning of more delays for things as simple as your information not matching up with what the IRS has.

The expanded child tax credit could also be a potential pitfall. People who received payments throughout the last year will likely get a smaller refund.

"Families have already received half of their tax credit in advance,” said Jean Pliakas, a tax preparer with Liberty Tax. "If they're used to getting a larger refund, they're going to be a little surprised this year because they have already received half of it."

The fastest way to get a refund is to file electronically and set up a direct deposit. The IRS says most people who do that get their refund within 21 days.

The tax filing deadline is April 18.

01/24/2022

Call today for an appointment, 423-753-7019.

Officials are encouraging taxpayers to file electronically with direct deposit to help ensure issuing refunds do not face processing delays. They're also urging taxpayers to check for accuracy when filing – especially making sure to report accurate stimulus payment amounts received and advanced child tax credit payments – to avoid delays.

The IRS will send two letters:

Letter 6419 — informing taxpayers of their advance CTC payments. The agency began sending these letters in December and will continue to do so in January.
Letter 6475 — about the third stimulus check. That letter will be sent in late January.
Keep both of these letters and refer to them when you complete your tax return, tax experts said.

IMPORTANT 2021 CHILD TAX CREDIT LETTER INFORMATION:

The IRS is sending information letters to recipients of advance child tax credit payments and third Economic Impact Payments

The IRS started issuing information letters to advance child tax credit recipients in December. Recipients of the third round of the Economic Impact Payments will begin receiving information letters at the end of January. Using the information in these letters when preparing a tax return can reduce errors and delays in processing.

People receiving these letters should keep them. Do not throw them away. These letters can help taxpayers, or their tax professionals prepare their 2021 federal tax return.

To help taxpayers reconcile and receive all the 2021 child tax credits to which they are entitled, the IRS started sending Letter 6419, 2021 advance CTC, in late December 2021 and will continue into January. This letter includes the total amount of advance child tax credit payments taxpayers received in 2021 and the number of qualifying children used to calculate the advance payments. People should keep this and any other IRS letters about advance child tax credit payments with their tax records.

Families who received advance payments need to file a 2021 tax return and compare the advance payments they received in 2021 with the amount of the child tax credit they can properly claim on their 2021 tax return.

The letter contains important information that can make preparing their tax returns easier. People who received the advance payments can also check the amount of their payments by using the CTC Update Portal available on IRS.gov.

Eligible families who did not receive any advance child tax credit payments can claim the full amount of the child tax credit on their 2021 federal tax return. This includes families who don't normally need to file a tax return.
