Forget about looksmaxxing, we’re all about money maxxing at D&P Financial 🤑

If I were a business owner trying to keep as much of my hard-earned money as possible, here’s what I’d do first ↓

1️⃣ Track every single expense.

Yeah, it's not groundbreaking advice, I get it...

But when you miss expenses, you miss out on write-offs. And fewer write-offs = higher taxes. Boo!

2️⃣ Be ~critical~ of your spending every month.

I'm not talking about a vague understanding of your total expenses.

I want you to actually sit down with last month's P&L and come up with an exact reason for why EVERY expense was necessary.

If you can't justify an expense, it's probably time to cut it.

3️⃣ I'd be booking a tax planning meeting with your tax accountant ASAP.

Taxes are one of the biggest expenses of our lifetime. The more you can optimize here, the better!

That’s exactly why tax planning is such a huge focus at D&P Financial 📊

You don’t have to go to extremes, like moving to Puerto Rico, to save a lot of money on taxes as a business owner.

These 3️⃣ tax moves are some of the lowest effort tax moves you can make to start saving more today.

Some of the extra ✨little✨ things I do as a [your niche] bookkeeper:

→ [Customize this with how you go above + beyond with your monthly reporting. What level of analysis do you provide? Do you celebrate their wins? Track progress towards their goals? Do you send a video explanation? Brag on yourself here].

→ Provide your CPA with a clean, tax-ready bookkeeping package

→ Connect you with other service-providers for [your niches] that I personally trust, like CPAs, attorneys, and coaches.

→ Actually know what's going on in your life and help with things *other* than bookkeeping. [Share a recent story of how you went above + beyond for a client, like connecting them with another service provider, helping them find an open office space, or how you personally patronized their business].

This is the type of notice that every taxpayer is terrified of getting...

But I'm here to teach you that getting an audit notice isn't the end of the world. 🙂‍↔️

This type of notice is actually pretty straightforward!

It lets you know exactly what area of your tax return the IRS is looking at + what documentation they expect you to provide. 🔍

Generally, you need to respond within 30 days of receiving your notice (but double-check the due date for your exact letter).

If you had a tax accountant prepare your return for the tax year in question, let them know you've received this notice and would like their help!

The dreaded Notice LT11: This is your notice of intent to levy and your right to a hearing.

Basically, the IRS hasn't received a response to previous notices regarding your balance(s) due, and they're running out of patience.

This notice is *serious* and requires a response. 📨

Otherwise, the IRS can pursue wage garnishments, levy your bank accounts, and seize certain assets.

If you've gotten to the point where you've received an LT11, it's time for professional help to ensure you're meeting all deadlines and advocating for your best interests.

Sharing two very random, but very necessary side quests I went on for my business owner bookkeeping clients this week 🌟

It would be realllly nice if the IRS had a cute little decision tree for what receipts a business owner needs to keep… 😅

But, they actually don't give a *ton* of guidance on receipts.

A few things they're sticklers on:

The IRS wants you to keep receipts for all lodging (hotels, Airbnbs, etc) while on business travel.

For any purchases of $75 or more of other business travel, non-entertainment meals, gifts, or transportation? Keep those receipts, too.

Otherwise, the IRS wants records of the date, amount, payee, proof of payment, and business purpose of your purchases.

Account statements and good bookkeeping can help substantiate your business expenses and keep your records audit-ready 📚

Okay, getting into the IRS notices that *feel* a little scarier: it's CP2000.

This letter lets you know that the IRS received income or payment info from a third party that doesn't match what you reported.

Here's what you need to know about this notice ↓

The IRS is just letting you know that they noted some inconsistencies with your return.

It doesn't necessarily mean you got something wrong! That income could be reported elsewhere on your return.

You (and your tax accountant) should review the notice against your filed return and respond accordingly.

This isn't a letter to ignore; make sure to follow the instructions listed on your notice.

Feel a little overwhelmed handling employee benefits, overtime, tax filings, and all the other annoying little payroll things? 😅

I always talk about my monthly bookkeeping service... but my payroll add-on is one of my best-kept secrets!

When we handle payroll for business owners, here’s what you get:

→ review or set up of TaxDome
→ regular payroll processing
→ a quick compliance check on documentation for employees + contractors
→ W-2 + 1099 preparation

And most importantly, no more waking up in the middle of the night panicking about whether you ran payroll in time for a holiday weekend! 😮‍💨

So... this one is a not-so-fun notice.

It's basically the IRS telling you that they think you owe them money! 🫴

If you worked with a tax accountant for the tax year in question, let them know you received this notice and would like additional support responding!
