Three books worth adding to your list right now if you care about protecting your wealth and understanding where the economy is headed.

The first is Strangers, a memoir by Belle Boggs about an heiress who went through divorce and realized too late that she had failed to protect her family trust. It is a fascinating read from an estate and marital protection standpoint.

The second is 1929, which chronicles everything leading up to and following the Great Depression. History doesn't repeat itself but it sure does rhyme, and the parallels to today are hard to ignore.

The third is The University of Berkshire Hathaway, a collection of notes taken by two attendees across 32 consecutive years of Berkshire Hathaway shareholder meetings. Watching how their insights evolved over time makes this one genuinely hard to put down.

Even the most educated, privileged, and well-resourced people make devastating financial mistakes when emotions are involved and the worst case scenario feels too uncomfortable to plan for.

Belle Burden was a Vanderbilt and Standard Oil heiress who signed a prenup that left her nearly stripped of everything she brought into her marriage, not because she was careless, but because she didn't slow down to truly consider what could go wrong.

The people advising you are not trying to be pessimistic. They are trying to protect you, and the time to listen to them is before you need to.

Financial planning goes far beyond your investment portfolio, and most people are only paying attention to one piece of the puzzle.

A thoughtful plan looks at your investments, taxes, charitable giving, and estate planning together as one picture so that your money is working as efficiently as possible in every direction. The goal is to reach a point where you can live your life without constantly worrying about money.

That takes not just a good plan but the discipline to stick with it.

Almost everyone wants to pay less in taxes, yet one of the most common mistakes we see is how high net worth investors handle their cash.

We reviewed a $20 million portfolio where the funds were sitting in a taxable money market, generating enough in dividends and interest that a retired couple with minimal Social Security was reporting over $500,000 in ordinary income. That is a costly and very avoidable mistake.

Comment below if this is something you have thought about and we will share how we can help: www.ullmannwealthpartners.com/contact-us2
