A new client came to us this year with a $42,000 federal R&D credit already claimed. Their state credit had never been calculated. 🗺️
We ran the numbers. It came to roughly $40,000.
Nearly as much as the federal credit, and it was almost left behind.
It happens more often than you'd think. The federal R&D credit gets most of the attention, but many states offer their own credit on top of it, each with its own rules, rates, and paperwork.
That means the same qualified work can earn twice. It also means the state credit isn't a copy of the federal one. California, for example, only counts research performed in California.
Federal and state credits should be planned together, not left as an afterthought.
We calculate both, so the full value of your work shows up where it should.
Not sure your state credit was ever claimed? We'll check alongside your CPA.
