The IRS has certainly been busy! One decision passed down by the IRS on August 24, 2022 has caught the attention of the tax world.

Late filed 1040 (individual) and 1120 (corporate) returns for tax year 2019 and 2020 will automatically have penalties waived. That's good news for over 1.6 million people. Already paid those late penalties when your return was filed? $1.2 billion will be issued in refunds by the end of September, 2022. If your return for tax year 2019 or 2020 has not been filed yet, there's still time! You're eligible for the penalty abatement as long as the return is filed by 09/30/22.

The IRS has also decided to waive fees for late filed Forms 1099. To qualify for this, the 2019 Forms 1099 would have needed to have been filed by 08/01/2020. The 2020 Forms 1099 would have needed to have been filed by 08/01/2021.

Postcards are being received by those filing a sales tax, hotel/motel tax, or consumer's use tax with the Iowa Department of Revenue as a reminder regarding filing frequency changes.

To have been considered an annual filer before 07/01/2022, only $120 tax per year had to be collected. Before 07/01/2022, if less than $6,000 per year was collected, taxpayers filed a return and paid taxes on a quarterly basis. A monthly filing frequency was given to those collecting more than $6,000 but less than $60,000 per year in tax. For those collecting more than $60,000 per year in tax, two returns and payments per month were required. Seems pretty complicated, right?

Beginning 07/01/2022, things will become simpler. If the tax collected is less than $1,200 per year, a return and payment can be filed annually. If $1,200 or more in tax is collected per year, after 07/01/2022, monthly filing and paying of tax will be required.

On May 13, 2022 the IRS released a statement saying it had destroyed 1% of the paper information returns (Forms 1099, 1098, W2) received for tax year 2020 due to outdated software and an overload of paperwork. In order to process 2021 tax returns, an update had to be done on their software which did not allow 2020 documents to be processed after 12/31/2020.

How many information returns equate to that 1% the IRS destroyed? Approximately 30 million returns which had not been reviewed or processed.
