Last week's implosion of Silicon Valley Bank was scary and personally painful as I have old friends who have worked there for years and now have unknown futures. When a 40-year-old firm fails in 48 hours, the market panics. The unexpected closure of SVB was caused by many factors, some foreseeable, some not, coming together into a white squall event. This is a classic example of single stock risk and why our core accounts rely so heavily on ETFs rather than individual stocks. I foresaw some additional panic in the regional bank industry over the next week or so, but Janet Yallen has come in to save the day for account holders. No other large financial institution had SVB’s concentrated focus on the IPO market in Northern California. And, as such, I do not believe that SVB’s failure is the tip of a larger iceberg!
