I enjoyed attending the TXCPA Houston Summer Open House last week. It was a great opportunity to connect with fellow CPAs, new members, and professionals across a variety of specialties.

I believe the best way to serve clients is to continue learning, build strong professional relationships, and collaborate with specialists when needed.

Thank you to the Houston CPA Society for hosting a great event. I look forward to future networking opportunities!

🏑 New Landlord? Read This Before Tax Season

Becoming a landlord comes with new tax responsibilities, and many first-time landlords make costly mistakes during their first year.

In my latest guide, I explain:

βœ… When your rental activity begins
βœ… Costs are deductible, capitalized, or treated as start-up costs
βœ… Whether your rental losses may reduce your taxes
βœ… How to document your rental timeline

πŸš™ Thinking About Buying a Company Vehicle Before Year-End?

If you're an S corporation owner, don't assume the vehicle should automatically be titled in your business's name.

The right approach depends on your specific tax situation.

Before making the purchase, consider:

βœ… Will the vehicle be used for both business and personal purposes?

βœ… Should the S corporation own the vehicle, or should you own it personally and be reimbursed under an accountable plan?

βœ… Do you need an Intercompany Agreement with proper accounting?

βœ… Will personal use create taxable income?

βœ… How will depreciation and Section 179 affect your tax return?

The answer isn't the same for every business owner. A little planning before you buy can help you avoid costly tax mistakes.

If you're considering purchasing a business vehicle, let's discuss the tax implications before you sign the paperwork.

πŸ“Š We're Halfway Through the Year

July is a great time to take a step back and review your tax situation before year-end.

Ask yourself:

βœ… Has your income changed?
βœ… Did you start a business or side hustle?
βœ… Buy or sell a rental property?
βœ… Sell stocks or cryptocurrency?
βœ… Get married or have a child? College expenses?

Waiting until tax season may limit your planning opportunities. A mid-year review can help you identify tax-saving strategies while there's still time to act.

πŸ“… Upcoming Tax Deadlines

β€’ September 15, 2026 – Extended due date for Partnership (Form 1065) and S Corporation (Form 1120-S) tax returns, and the third-quarter estimated tax payment due for many taxpayers.

β€’ October 15, 2026 – Extended due date for most individual income tax returns (Form 1040).

If you filed an extension or have questions about your tax situation, now is a great time to get started instead of waiting until the deadline.

Remember: An extension gives you more time to fileβ€”not more time to pay. If you expect to owe taxes, penalties and interest may apply to unpaid balances.
