As a business owner, you must develop a vibrant and healthy culture within your organization. You can have the best strategy in the world, or invent the next great world changing technology, but without the right team culture, you will never execute that strategy with any level of efficiency. According to Satya Nadela, the CEO of Microsoft, "as a leader it is critical that you do 3 things. You must Model, Mentor, and Care."
Be a role model.
People will not follow someone that does not live by a strong set of values. Your team will not follow someone they do not respect. For example, if you gossip about a family member, that speaks to your character and what you represent.
Take time to Mentor.
A lot of business owners say they do not have the time to train their people. They are "too busy". This statement may feel true. I get it. I hear it all the time. "What if I spend all this time training them and they quit?" Well, what if you never train them and they stay? You need to believe that you can improve the life of any person that spends time with your company; that they will develop and grow because of the time they spent with you.
Care.
You need to care about your team. This may be the hardest one for some, but argueably the most important. Yes, it could make running a business complicated, but you need to care about your people. As a business owner, you want loyalty from your team and you want to develop trust. Yet, you are not willing to say "thank you", or "hey, awesome job today." You need to do this, genuinely, from your heart. People will know the authenticity of your caring not just by your words. It cannot be measured, but it can surely be felt. Put the team first and care about them; they will in turn care about you and the company.
Your business is your life. If you hire people, you have made them a part of your life. Make it a place, where people wake up in the morning and cannot wait to be a part of. Make it a place you love to go to everyday. That at this company, you are in the company of those who care.
