IRS just increased the standard mileage allowance starting July 1 to 62.5 cents

Announcement 2022-13 advises that the Internal Revenue Service is revising the optional standard mileage rates that were provided in Notice 2022-3, 2022-2 I.R.B. 308, for substantiating the costs of operating an automobile for business, medical or moving purposes. Beginning July 1, 2022, the rates are 62.5 cents per mile for business use of an automobile and 22 cents per mile for costs of using an automobile as a medical or moving expense. Notice 2022-3 is modified.

IRS is somewhere in the 20 million plus tax returns behind in processing. Hiring new people who have no experience dealing with their antiquated software and technology is their rallying cry. What could go wrong with untrained workers dealing with this?

IRS Commissioner Charles Rettig told House lawmakers he expects the backlog of tens of millions of unprocessed tax returns to clear by the end of 2022.
