Looking to buy a new summer vacation home? FIRPTA has something to say about it – so pay less attention to the swanky backyard pool and more to who your seller is.

If you buy property from a foreign seller, the Foreign Investment in Real Property Tax Act (FIRPTA) says you have to withhold 15% of the gross sales price and send it to the IRS. The seller ultimately pays the tax, unless you fail to do your part. Then it might come out of YOUR pocket.
