This is Lewy Body Dementia in a nursing home.

Maybe not what you expected to see heading into the weekend, but this is a photo from my Nana’s 79th birthday—she passed not long after it was taken. 🎂

That’s 5 out of her 6 grandchildren here—we’re missing Lukey, who was finishing his degree out in San Francisco.

This moment is more than a memory. It was one of the most formative experiences of my life, and it taught me far more about helping my clients than a weekly call or content from a partner firm.

What’s not pictured here is the generation above us—her children and our parents. The ones managing care for three generations at once. As the oldest grandchild, with a bit more life experience, I had the perspective to observe my mother, aunt, and uncle as they balanced time, money, and emotional energy between themselves, their children, and their mother.

This isn’t unique. It’s happening everywhere.

We were fortunate. My Nana was exactly where she needed to be, with quality care—because her children combined their resources to make it happen.

Lately, I’ve seen other advisors posting about the intricate, high-stakes planning they’re doing for ultra-high-net-worth clients. And while that’s impressive—it’s also a little like financial showboating.

But here’s the truth:

The most emotionally complex and financially demanding situations don’t only exist in the world of the ultra-wealthy.

I’ve seen families with no money making incredibly tough decisions. And yes—they really let you buy a premium casket and burn it for cremation. But I promise you: that’s not good financial advice.

Investing a windfall requires considering age, risk tolerance, and financial goals. Younger investors can afford more risk, while older investors should focus on stability. Consult a financial planner to tailor investment strategies to individual circumstances.

An economic downturn isn't a sure thing; for many vacationers, we're talking an all-inclusive cruise instead of a flight to Europe. But it is time for fixed-price options like cruises and streaming to take precedent over more freewheeling spending.
