Do you need to file 1099s at the end of the year? Are you clear on who requires one? These are all questions your bookkeeper can assist you with.
Being proactive about tax season by having all your W-9 documents ready can significantly reduce the stress associated with tax time.

A good rule of thumb is that if you pay someone more than $600 in a year, even through multiple payments, and they aren’t on your payroll, they should likely receive a W-9.

This can include:

- Independent contractors, day laborers, or side help paid over $600 annually.
- Rent paid to individuals or businesses.
- Expenses for construction contractors or handymen.
- Musicians or event planners compensated more than $600 in a year."

The list is much more extensive, so if you ever feel confused or uncertain, don’t hesitate to reach out to a bookkeeping or tax professional for assistance.

The Profit and Loss Statement serves as a scorecard for a specific period, illustrating how Income minus Expenses results in Net Income (the remaining funds after operational costs).

The Balance Sheet functions as a financial health check for your business, highlighting its overall financial stability.

The Cash Flow Statement answers the question of how much cash should have entered your bank account and where the remaining funds were spent.

Together, these three reports are vital for comprehending your business’s financial landscape, and understanding how they interconnect is crucial. It’s also important to find a bookkeeper who can review these reports with you in a way that makes sense, helping you gain a clearer understanding of your business's financial health.

This morning's Wise Whisper of Small Business Bookkeeping.

Organizing your receipts is crucial for your business. Maintaining copies that validate legitimate expenses is important in case you undergo an audit.

Collaborating with your bookkeeper to establish a system for managing receipts is essential. Digital copies are particularly useful for keeping the ink intact. Don't forget to retain receipts from purchases on platforms like Amazon, eBay, Etsy, and other online platforms.

It does not have to be stressful or time consuming some useful strategies are:

1) Digital Storage: Scan or photograph receipts and store them in a cloud-based system. This preserves the integrity of the information and makes it easily accessible.

2) Categorization: Organize receipts by category (e.g., supplies, travel, marketing) to simplify bookkeeping and tax preparation.

3) Regular Maintenance: Set a regular schedule (e.g., weekly or monthly) to review and organize your receipts to prevent backlog.

4) Use Receipt Management Apps: Consider using apps designed for receipt tracking that can automate data entry and integration with accounting software. Your bookkeeper should be able to find one that works for you.

5) Backup: Regularly back up your digital files to ensure you don’t lose important records.

By collaborating with your bookkeeper and implementing these strategies, you can streamline your financial management and stay audit-ready!
