A special enrollment period for health care plans through Healthcare.gov will start this Sunday, March 15 through April 30. This enrollment is for those who had to pay a fee with their 2014 federal tax return for not having health coverage in 2014, and for those who were confused or didn’t know about open enrollment dates for 2015 coverage. If you want to avoid an even higher penalty next year, this might be a good option for you.

Many of our clients ask us which types of income are taxable and which are not. Taxable income includes money you earn, like wages, tips and also property received via bartering.

Gifts, child support payments, welfare benefits, and cash rebates are usually not taxable. If you're not sure, please bring it up at your appointment, and we can determine if you need to report it or not.

Good news for consumers! Grocery prices may finally start to drop later this year due to falling commodity prices. Be patient though: "Prices go up like an arrow and come down like a feather."

Oil prices aren't the only thing that's dropped. The prices of everything from corn to sugar have fallen, too. So some economists predict lower prices at the grocery store later this year.

I received a question from a client last week about taking an early withdrawal from a retirement account as cash. I thought I would bring it up here to help others considering the same option. Be aware that early withdrawals (made prior to age 59.5) are subject to regular income tax PLUS an added 10% tax. There are some exceptions, but you'll want to talk to us first before taking that kind of a hit. We'll be happy to discuss your options with you.
