📢 Important Tax Tip for Parents & Guardians! 📢
Ever tried to file your tax return only to be told your child was already claimed as a dependent — and you know it wasn’t you? 😬
Good news: the IRS now offers a tool to help protect your family’s tax return.
✅ Children can now have their own IRS Identity Protection PIN (IP PIN).
An IP PIN is a 6-digit number issued by the IRS that helps prevent someone else from using your child’s Social Security number on a tax return. If your child has an IP PIN, the IRS will only accept a return that includes that PIN — helping stop fraud and unauthorized claims.
✨ Why this matters:
• You can still e-file your return when you have your child’s IP PIN - but be prepared to prove that you have the right to claim the child.
• IP PINs are available for taxpayers, spouses, and dependents
• The IRS issues a new PIN each year for added protection
🛡️ Think of it as a security lock for your child’s tax identity — because their Social Security number shouldn’t be anyone else’s “free-for-all.”
If you’re interested in getting an IP PIN for your child or want help navigating the process, feel free to reach out. Planning ahead can save a lot of stress during tax season!
