Today is the day! If you have your own business and use your personal vehicle for business, whether occasionally or a lot, the IRS requires both a mileage log and odometer readings in order to deduct standard mileage. Write down or take a picture or somehow record the odometer reading from your vehicle right now (and every December 31st.) If you are ever examined by the IRS you will be glad you did. Happy New Year from all of us at Darrcie Inman, CPA!

IRS standard mileage rate is going up to 62.5 cents starting July 1st, 2022 ( up from 58.5 cents the first half of the year.) If you track your mileage, be sure to be aware of the need to track the first half of the year and the second half of the year separately.

Great article! I have been recently frustrated because several new clients have come to me after another person "set them up" and they don't even know how their own business is being taxed. Whether you are my client or use another tax professional, it is important to understand these things.

Be sure to compare your letter to your bank account or login to your IRS account to confirm. I have already seen an incorrect letter for the third stimulus payment, too!

The first monthly Advanced Child Tax Credit comes out today. If you believe you are eligible watch your bank accounts for payments and your mail for a letter. Here is a really good article explaining the credit and options on how to update your information with the IRS or opt out of the monthly payments. If you would like advice on your particular tax situation and whether or not you should opt out, please make an appointment with me for a phone consultation or send me an email.

You probably got a child tax credit payment today if you didn't opt out. We'll explain why you may want to unenroll before the August payment.

Are you still waiting on the IRS for a refund or to resolve another tax matter? Here is information I got from another CPA. You are not alone!!

"We contacted Don Bacon’s office (Nebraska senator) to inquire about the debacle that is the IRS system of tax return processing. The situation is so dire that they have a person that is now specifically appointed to deal with this issue. Here are a few of the tidbits he shared with us.

As of May 2021, the IRS has a backlog of 35 million returns
Of the 35 million returns, only 16 million are paper returns (ask yourself why there is a backlog of 19 million ELECTRONIC returns because it’s a sweetheart of an answer)
There is a backlog of 19 million electronic returns because the IRS’s servers are short on space and cannot download anymore. The returns are “marked” in a special way to indicate their status and will presumably be downloaded as server space becomes available.
The representative visited the Kansas City location of the IRS where there are 19 semi-trucks full of returns waiting to be processed. This is just ONE location.
The IRS is manually adjusting all returns that reported unemployment income before the form change to exclude a portion of UC received
Last, but not least, he reported that the IRS is MANUALLY checking all returns for the stimulus reporting. He reported that there are no automated or electronic means by which the IRS can perform this function."
