NEW YORK STATE TARGETS REMOTE WORKERS

New York State residents and/or workers have been receiving notices questioning their whereabouts in 2020 and asking why they had paid less tax to the state than they have in past years. More notices like these are expected to be sent in the coming months.

THIS MAY AFFECT YOU IF:
You were employed by a company based in NY but worked remotely during the pandemic.
You were a nonresident who telecommuted because your office in NY was closed.
You moved out of NY state in 2020.

HOW TO PREPARE:
You only could have stopped allocating income to NY if you were reassigned to an office in a different state or created a bona fide home office in another state, so ensure you have evidence of this reassignment or bona fide home office.
If you moved out of New York, be sure to document relocation of valuables, discontinuation of fees or school tuitions and utilities being disconnected in your New York home.
If you were a nonresident of NY but were employed by a NY based company, keep in mind that you may receive credits from your home state such as New Jersey or Connecticut so weigh the amount of additional tax liability NY claims against the cost and effort of appealing it.

Attention New Jersey businesses: starting October 1st, there will be an increase in the unemployment insurance tax rate in order to help replenish this fund that was depleted due to pandemic unemployment claims. See the link below to find out more.
