"Pretty good, I think."

"We're busy, so I'm not worried."

"It feels tighter than usual, but I'm not sure why."

Ask a business owner how things are going and you'll usually get an answer like one of these. The instinct isn't wrong, but it might be incomplete; a business can feel busy and still be losing money on every job, or feel stable while cash quietly thins out month over month.

Financial statements exist because gut feel misses things. Our recent article walks through the signals worth watching in your cash flow, your margins, and your balance sheet, and what each one is actually telling you.

Real estate or construction businesses in 2026: is your tax strategy keeping up with how fast the landscape is shifting?

Key trends to watch include:

*️⃣ State audit activity in this sector has nearly doubled year over year, with real estate and construction seeing more disputes than any other industry surveyed

*️⃣ Multistate project activity is creating tax exposure that many firms don't realize they have until it's flagged

*️⃣ More firms than ever are entering the tax credit transfer market for the first time, even as the process gets more competitive

Missing a deadline by a few days used to mean picking up the phone and formally requesting relief, even for taxpayers with a clean track record. That's changing.

The IRS's new Automatic Exemption from Penalty applies relief automatically for eligible taxpayers with a solid filing and payment history, cutting out the extra step entirely. It's rolling out gradually through the rest of 2026.

Here's what you need to know: https://www.hfm.cpa/post/irs-simplifies-penalty-relief-with-a-new-automatic-process

Fill up lately? The IRS noticed too, and just raised the standard mileage rate for the rest of 2026.

Effective July 1, 2026:

• Business mileage: 76 cents/mile (⬆️from 72.5 cents)
• Medical/moving mileage: 23.5 cents/mile (⬆️from 20.5 cents)
• Charitable mileage: stays fixed at 14 cents/mile

It's the first mid-year rate change since 2022. Per the IRS, the rate that applies depends on when the expense was paid or incurred, not a single flat rate for the year.

The tax landscape has changed significantly for businesses in 2026; is your strategy keeping up?

The One Big Beautiful Bill Act (OBBBA) has introduced major changes that are already reshaping how businesses approach tax planning. From charitable deductions and research costs to opportunity zones and energy tax credits, the opportunities are significant - but only for those who plan ahead.

Key areas to focus on this year:

✓ Corporate charitable deduction changes
✓ Research and experimentation cost recovery
✓ Tariff refund opportunities
✓ Qualified small business stock benefits
✓ Energy tax credit strategies

Don't wait until year-end to start planning. The businesses that act now will be best positioned to take advantage of what's available.
