CEO Molly Porter is back on the road today headed to the regional track meet to cheer on her daughter as another sports season comes to a close. This week has been a busy one with end-of-season events, practices, meets, and all the moments that come with being a sports mom and business owner at the same time.

Work-life balance can be challenging when you own a company and wear the title of “mom” first. But one thing I’ve learned is this: showing up matters.

“Let us not love with words or speech but with actions and in truth.” — 1 John 3:18

That verse reminds me that being present for the people we care about is one of the greatest ways we can love them. Whether it’s sitting in the stands for my daughter or showing up for my clients during tax season and beyond, I believe consistency, support, and presence make all the difference.

And of course, once again I’m being fueled by my local favorite, Sip n Spin ☕🚗

The look on my face when I realize the S-Corp wave is BACK… and somehow worse than ever 😳

During Covid, social media was flooded with “quick tax tips” that made S-Corp elections sound like a no-brainer. And guess what? Tons of small business owners jumped in… only to find out later it has COST THEM THOUSANDS.

Now it seems like it’s become the go-to recommendation from a lot of tax professionals — and I’m here to say it loud:

I will NOT get on the S-Corp bandwagon. Not now. Not EVER.

Don’t get me wrong — S-Corp elections can be incredibly powerful for the right business. But there are very specific benchmarks you should hit before you even THINK about making that move.

If someone is advising you to elect S-Corp status, ask WHY.

👉 Have you had consistently high tax bills?
👉 Do you have losses carrying forward?
👉 What does your future income actually look like?
👉 Do you understand the process to elect AND maintain it?

Don’t fly blind.

Education is the key to success for any small business. If you don’t feel like your tax professional is educating you or you don’t fully understand what’s being done on your behalf…

We received a happy gram from the DOR this morning, and it’s the kind that makes everything we do worthwhile: a FULL abatement granted for one of our clients 🙌

This case involved significantly historic items that occurred long before this client partnered with Genesis Tax & Accounting—issues they were completely in the dark about at the time. Sadly, this is something we see far too often. The part that disheartens me the most is watching small business owners flounder and suffer serious consequences due to poor advisement, especially when they did reach out for help and trusted the guidance they were given.

Early evening found Molly Porter in a place far removed from glowing spreadsheets and quiet offices. The building buzzed with energy — concrete walls, fluorescent lights, and the constant thud of arrows hitting targets. School teams filled every lane. Coaches called out corrections. Parents watched from behind the line.
For a brief window, Molly wasn’t the nighttime accounting guru or CEO. She was archery mom.
Her kiddo stepped up for the first tournament of the season, surrounded by other young archers, all chasing the same goal: State qualification. Molly watched posture instead of profit margins, breathing instead of balance sheets. Draw. Anchor. Release.
