PSA - This is for 2025 State of Michigan income tax returns with a balance due.

If your 2025 MI return had a balance due that included penalty and interest and you received a check, or multiple checks, from MI for the amount of the penalty and interest, DO NOT cash the check(s). These checks were sent in error. If you cashed it/them, you'll receive a letter at some point asking for it back. You'll need to send the money back.

Feel free to reach out if you have any questions.

As we approach the end of the tax season, please be aware that filing an extension grants you until October 15, 2026, to submit your return.

However, it is critical to note that an extension applies only to the filing deadline, not the payment deadline. Any taxes owed will begin to accrue interest starting April 15, 2026

To avoid a late filing, penalty be sure to file an return or request an extension by April 15, even if you can’t pay the full amount owed. See: www.irs.gov/extensions

If you've seen this flyer near ATMs around the Metro Detroit area and even across the state, you've come across FBI Detroit's and our local law enforcement partners' coordinated effort to warn the public about cryptocurrency ATM scams. Criminals are increasingly exploiting these machines and the people who use them to steal money.

The campaign's goal is to help individuals identify indicators of potential fraud and take the appropriate steps to protect themselves from victimization. Many of us are now receiving the tax documents we need to file our tax return. If you sold or disposed of digital assets using a broker, you might receive a new Form 1099-DA. Most of these statements will not include the basis for digital asset transactions in 2025 and you'll have to calculate the basis on your own to determine your gain or loss.

Don't forget: You must report any related income, gains, or losses, on your tax return, whether you receive a Form 1099-DA or not.

For more important reminders about digital assets, visit https://ow.ly/fpkE50Y7Gpc.
