If you have been affected by the Covid-19 pandemic (and who hasn't?), there is a bit of good news for you.
The Federal government has put several programs into place to help us along as our jobs and businesses are put on hold.
Most people have heard of the $1200 checks that people who make under $100,000 a year are going to receive. This is expected to take about 3 weeks to get out and will be based on your 2019 tax return AGI, or your 2018 return, if you have not yet filed this year.
As far as the other programs in place:
Number one, I advise everyone to apply for Unemployment Insurance. Even if you are not actually "employed" in the W-2 sense, apply anyway. The new disaster rules allow even 1099 contractors, gig-workers, and the self-employed to be eligible for this.
Secondly, if you are a small business or 1099 worker, apply for the SBA (Small Business Administration) Disaster Assistance Loan. Here is the link: https://covid19relief.sba.gov/ #/. This loan now has a streamlined online application that can be filled out in a few minutes (the application says 2 1/2 hours, but that is greatly overstated if you have the information you need.
An especially nice feature of this loan is that you can get an advance of up to $10,000 to tide you over until they process the loan. This money is a GRANT, meaning you do not have to pay it back, even if you don't qualify for the SBA loan. It is supposed to take only 3 days to be deposited to your bank account, but take that with a grain of salt. They have been inundated with applications since they opened the streamlined application on Monday, March 30th. So be patient and check your bank account daily.
Finally, if you are a business that has employees, apply for the Payroll Protection Program (PPP) through your bank. This is also managed by the SBA, but there is not an online application. This is a loan to cover your payroll expenses to keep your people employed while you are shut down or operating below capacity. This loan can be forgiven if you keep your employees through the summer, so it's a great option for those who have employees.
If you apply and qualify for both the SBA Disaster Loan, AND the PPP, you can roll over your disaster loan into the Payroll Protection Program and have it forgiven with documentation of allowable expenses.
