To all WA State Business Owners - DSHS has proposed that small businesses be required to report independent contractors and withhold child support from them. That means that your business would have to collect information from every sole proprietor, single member LLC, and solely owned corporation prior to having them perform work for you so that you could report them as a "New Hire" to DSHS and wait to see if DSHS will send a child support withholding notice before you pay that other small business owner. This, to me, will be an enforcement nightmare. It is already a struggle to get W-9's completed in order to do 1099-NEC's at the end of the year. This would add a whole new complexity. If you think this wouldn't apply to you - it's not just your construction subcontractors you have to report. It is your lawyer, your accountant, your business coach, your continuing education provider, your marketing pro, the photographer who takes pictures for your web site and page, your insurance agent....any service provider that you pay $600 or more that is a sole proprietor, SMLLC, or sole shareholder. This also means that companies will be asking for your personal information to report you to DSHS as well.
